First, I was electrified when I first saw Iris in the eponymous DVD and locked onto her style sense. Second, I immediately began acquiring interesting bangles, bracelets and necklaces. Finding unique clothing outside of NYC is a daunting prospect, particularly in the Upper Midwest. That being said, and with my well-thumbed edition of RARA AVIS in hand, I confess to being let down with this book. While the stories are wonderful, the accompanying visuals are not. First of all, there are many, many cartoonish graphics instead of actual photos of Iris in full plumage. Secondly, I could NOT BELIEVE there was no photo of the lion throne ring after a several page anecdote of its acquisition. Forgive me, but I view Iris as a multi-course banquet and this book as a light savory lunch.

I love Iris Apfel, and I love this book . . . they are very much the same. Some reviewers have complained that there's not much here, and in a way, they're right. The book is an incarnation of Iris, and she's not a person who let's us get to know her--not before the book, and not in the book. She is, no doubt about it, an amazing icon of style, and that comes through in the book. But she is not someone who self-reveals, not someone who is comfortable sharing intimately with the whole world. (Who of us is, except those who surround themselves with mirrors, literal and metaphorical?) Anyway, this is not an auto-biography and it's not a memoir. It's just photos and a few vignettes--interesting and amusing--strung together. To me, totally worth both the price and the time. I love her, I admire her, I'm fascinated by her. If you're looking for deep, you won't find it here. To those who want to know her intimately, I'm sure her answer would be the same as to those who want to browse her closets--"that's never going to happen."

You will love it!!! It's a quick, easy read. Heavy on imagery. Which is fantastic because the images are FANTASTIC! :)

Love it! The format is fun and easy to read. I am an artist, and a fan of Ms. Apfel. She can do no wrong! I only wish my skeleton was strong enough to wear all the mounds of heavy beads and bracelets that she can navigate! Easy read, and fun format. Great gift for my older girlfriends. She is an inspiration all around! You go, Iris. I hope you live to 110, at least!!!

love iris but hate to say this book is not much of a book. if you have been following all things iris these past few years (and if you love to read), you won't find anything new in this book. i was really hoping for more memoir, more words from such an inspirational woman, but the book really is a recap of every cute graphic and antidote you can already find on the internet. the documentary about iris, on the other hand, was marvelous. perhaps i should have purchased that instead.

You must buy this book. She is one of those wonderful interesting people. The quotes are great and fun.

Great book, What an amazing woman! Her confidence is incredible and although some of her outfits are pret-t-y weird, her 'couldn't give a hoot' attitude is inspiration to at least try wearing four necklaces at a time if not 14 like she does! I also love, love, love her home - it's as exotic and eclectic as she is.

I have read and written reviews on many of them such as Shut Up, Stop Whining and get a life, The Art of War, Think and Grow Rich and Fortune Favors the Bold.This volume is based upon the book by Richard Koch, "The 80/20 Principle: The secret of achieving more with less." The unique illustrations combined with the basic principles of Koch's original book makes this volume come alive. The basic theory is based upon some research which showed that in most things, 80 % of the work and achievements in the world are done by only 20 % of the people. This basic principle applies to just about every kind of area of life you can think of, and the author emphasizes that a person can achieve much more with less effort by Applying the 80-/20 principle.I have not read the original book but I found this volume explained and illustrated the principles so that it was clear and concise. Whether you have previously read the original book or are seeking a good overview of the 80/20 principle, you may want to check out this volume. The author explains that he was surprised there was a lot of articles about the 80/20 principle but no book on the subject... You bet, who would write a 250 pages book on something that could be explained in 3 minutes?The 80/20 principle itself is amazing indeed, but 95% of the points of this book come from 5% of its words. The same SINGLE idea is explained in 20 different contexts each repeated 20 times.Just read an article or introduction about the 80/20 principle and that's all you need to know really.

Some people have cynically commented that you only need to read 20% of this book, and the rest is all repetition.Those people do not actually understand the fractal nature of the 80/20 principle - how pervasive it is, or the extent to which you really need to immerse yourself in these concepts. Their opinions are worthless.I first read this book in 2003. I got to page 14 and Richard was explaining how 80/20 is closely related to chaos theory. I suddenly had an epiphany - making realizations that weren't even explicitly stated - and realized that inside every 80/20 is another 80/20, and another and another. 80/20 is fractal!Suddenly I looked out the window and saw 80/20 EVERYWHERE - in the trees, in the street, in the carpet in my house, in nearly every column of every spreadsheet in my business. Before I'd barely seen it at all, and even then only in the rear view mirror. After, I saw it everywhere all around me.At the time I was just starting to crack the code on Google AdWords, and I realized 80/20 is the key to pretty much everything in AdWords. And in marketing itself. 80/20 became my secret weapon. It was the backbone of AdWords and I included an 80/20 chapter in my very first ebook, "Definitive Guide to Google AdWords" which eventually became Entrepreneur Press's "Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords" which is the world's #1 book on internet advertising. It also inspired my book "80/20 Sales and Marketing."Richard makes a key observation, which is the difference between 80/20 ANALYSIS and 80/20 THINKING. Analysis is backward-looking. 80/20 Thinking is forward looking. When you know, in advance, that whatever you do is going to be 80/20 and nothing you do can change that, you artificially stack the deck to favor early successes. You kill your runts faster. You search for patterns that most people miss, and shortcut months or years of failure.Richard also delves into many subtleties of how 80/20 manifests in business, and how most businesses are losing money every time they sell 20% of their product line. But if you understand 80/20, you should read that kind of book 5 times and you can be nearly certain that you'll get 10X your time investment back every single time.When Richard starts getting philosophical near the end about this applying to relationships and whatnot, don't give in to the temptation to think he's over-reaching. He's not. 80/20 is a fundamental axiom of cause and effect, one of the great secret laws of the universe.I've read a LOT of great books but this one tops the list. It's been worth many millions of dollars to me in my career.

About the Author

Robert Stine holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University. He has taught at the Wharton School since 1983, during which time he has regularly taught business  statistics. His areas of research include computer software, time series analysis and forecasting, and general problems related to model identification and selection. Bob has published numerous articles in research journals, including the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Biometrika, and The Annals of Statistics.   Dean Foster holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. He has taught at the Wharton School since 1992 and previously taught at the University of Chicago. Great for school! Never once opened it up though

Comprehensive and relevant to me .

Bought the kindle version. Doesn't come with access to DataSet problems for exercises. Seems lame considering how much you are paying for the eBook version. Publishers should fix this issue with having password protected access to additional materials like other competitors.

If you cook italian, or cook seriously and have a reference library, you want this book. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if you only had one book on Italian congrats in your stable, this would be an excellent choice.

I was led to this book by my chef/mentor Mary Martini, manager of the Central Market Cooking School, San Antonio, TX.Marcella has had significant influence on Mary, and now on me. For Hazen, understanding Italian cooking begins with an appreciation for the importance of regional influence. Following that introduction is a tremendously illuminating 45 pages of "Fundamentals," discussing everything from developing "Flavors" to the selection & storage of flavor Components (e.g. Balsamic vinegar, Basil, Capers, Garlic, Extra virgin Olive Oil, Cheeses, Pasta, Meats, and on and on. These discussions are accompanied by illustrations and detailed instructions on how to create every dish you desire, plus advice on acquiring the right Equipment (e.g. Pasta machine, Food Mill, etc.), Tools & Baking necessities to achieve the Top Taste results you crave. The teaching tips (e.g. Filleting Breast of Chicken) continue through the many recipe offerings, helpfully divided by type of fish or meat being used. The book ends by describing "The Italian Art of Eating," with guidance on how to "Compose an Italian Menu: Principals & Examples." If your serious about Italian cooking, this book is a MUST!

I must admit I was hesitant to buy another Italian cookbook... but this book is awesome... it is loaded with information and recipes... I'm so glad I took a chance on this one... you won't be disappointed

So, this is what a true 'Italian' cooking book should be. There is no 'Italian' food, as the late Marcella explains, and it's all about in what region you are. She makes a perfect descriptions of all the different geographic regions and how this affects what people eat and how they cook. From the use of fat/butter in the north to olive oil in the south, and like that with pasta, dessert and meat in general.The recipes are great, although I sometimes make some shortcuts (like shorter cooking time for a tomato sauce) and they are still great.Nice desserts with Almonds and almond flour that are great for celiac people.

For a while now I had been searching for a good Italian book to add to my collection and cookbooks. I looked over many books and decided to purchase this one in response to the overwhelming support for this book. I received the book a week ago and have already cooked multiple recipes from the book and all of them taste amazing. One of the things I like most about this book is the ease of access to almost all of the ingredients required. I would say that 90% of the ingredients you need in this book and easily be found in your local grocery store with a few items found in either a specialty shop or a higher quality supermarket like Fairway or Whole Foods.I read here in one of the more critical reviews that this book is predominantly seafood and if you aren't a fan then this book isn't for you. I can say that is very wrong. Seafood consists of a small amount of the book when in comparison to all the other meats discussed in the book. There are so many delectable recipes here with easy instructions that there's no way that you could not want this book.This is definitely my favorite cookbook from now on.

Wow. I am absolutely floored by the amount of thought and detail put into this book. The instructions for each recipe are foolproof. I love that the sauce recipes even include a suggested type of pasta to use it with. Though there are no photos, there are added illustrations to demonstrate certain techniques (ie pasta making, meat preparations, etc). I foresee using this book for years to come and having no need for another Italian cookbook.

This cook book is old school true to form Italian cooking. It is easy to follow with a lot of great recipes. However be advised if you are intovery heavy foods with creams,fatty meats, heavy sauces, thick and gooey cheeses then this book should suit you well. I like more lighter of acuisine living the desert south west.

This is by far one of the best cookbooks i have read. It is not just a cookbook with collections of recipes. If you have not been born Italian with an Italian Nonna teaching you her techniques of cooking passed on through her generations this is the next best thing. Marcella Hazan is a true find. She has a definitive air of a master Italian cook. Marcella delivers her firm opinion and reasoning for THE RULES of good Italian cooking. Se tells you what you need and how to look for it and how to use it. It is as though she is your Italian Nonna by your side whispering in your ear and helping you to learn her deep knowledge and firm beliefs of being a good Italian cook. Her methods and descriptions are well versed and you can tell she put her love and soul into teaching this art. What a treasure. This book is an essential title to add to any cookbook collection and a must read if you want quality Italian food at home. By all means Get it, Read it and Use it. Highly recommended.
