I read through this book, not knowing what to expect but seeing this had been recommended by other severe insomniacs as beneficial. The author mainly speaks about her personal experience with insomnia, so from reading about someone else who went through the same experiences it was nice to know I wasn't alone. However, from actually learning how to conquer insomnia this book was not so helpful. The author describes that the power to resist insomnia lies within yourself and your beliefs and all you need to do is believe you can sleep and you can do it. That's true, however it's hard to turn a switch on and believe that and this author didn't provide much of a guide to get you to that point. I much prefer Say Goodnight to Insomnia by Gregg D. Jacobs. He's one of the pioneers into insomnia research and he takes you step by step how to adjust your own thoughts to reach the end goal of being able to sleep on your own, sans medication. He also backs up his statements with much more information and facts than what this author did.
My doc at One Medical recommended this book after I told him I'd been on and off (mostly on) ambien for almost 10 years. For me, bad sleep is more an anxiety problem than anything. Good to know, but not exactly a plan out of the misery. In my experience, therapists were good at treating general anxiety, but weren't tackling the sleep issue. MDs were good at prescribing the meds and recommending sleep habit changes but not at addressing the underlying anxiety. This book for me was the missing link that tied them together, and in particular was good at addressing the ways I thought about sleep and insomnia and how it was affecting my life. It proposes a pretty comprehensive plan that addresses the bad habits and challenges me to change my thinking about the issue. I followed the advice, read through the whole thing in a couple days, gave it a try and have managed to quit the pills entirely for almost a month now. Maybe more than that, it recommends keeping up with the anxiety relieving practices, and so not only am I finally sleeping like a normal person again, my anxiety over sleep is easing and my overall mood is improving. First day on the plan was pretty rough, but without the pills I woke up at least without the fog of ambien. Within a week I noticed I was getting to sleep naturally in less time. Now a few weeks in, sleep is starting to feel normal again and not like a daily battle. Definitely a challenge to stick with the plan. Really had to overcome inertia, but its working so far. It's a good combo of good bedroom habits and mindfulness. Can't give this enough stars.
I'm a mother to a special needs child who does not sleep well. My struggles with sleep began when she was born almost six years ago. Two years ago she began sleeping better but I began have severe insomnia. I dreaded bed time and went through my days feeling like a zombie. I complained to anyone who would listen about how little I slept. I would spend my days researching different treatments and asking in various facebook groups. I rarely went out after 8 at night because I was terrified if I didn't get to sleep by 930 I wouldn't be able to sleep. (this was just one of the weird rules I had about sleeping.) I would find a natural supplement that worked and I felt like finally something worked but it seemed to stop working within a few months leaving me back to searching for a "cure." I was convinced I had serious health problems that were causing my inability to fall asleep and stay asleep. The last straw was standing in front of the sleep section in my local health food store and realizing I had tried every single supplement. That same week I stumbled on this book and decided to give it a try. It left me with a great deal of hope. The first few nights were really rough. Getting up when I couldn't sleep felt like torture and I slept very little. I ended up taking something for sleep in the early morning hours out of desperation. During the day I tried not to think or talk about my insomnia. I forced myself to carry on the day like I had slept. By the forth day I gathered up all my sleep supplements and threw them away. I was ready to follow the book exactly. That night I slept through the night and it was amazing. Since then I've been able to fall asleep without fear and I no longer let myself be ruled by insomnia. Now if I have a night were I don't sleep well I no longer freak out and think, oh no my insomnia is back. Every single area of my life has gotten better since I've started sleeping again. I feel like I'm finally alive again. I'm so thankful I found this book!
My insomnia started a few years ago, where I'd wake up earlier and earlier (without trying) every day, until I was consistently waking up around 3am every night. Sometimes I'd wake up at 12:30am, and this is after going to bed at 10:30, so I wasn't functioning well during the day. I found myself having to take expensive sleep aids, but after a few days they stopped working, and I just kept increasing the doses. My doctor then prescribed me a small dose of Trazodone, which didn't help either, and I quit taking it when I ran a red light on my way to work the next morning!I found this book and it has changed my life! I started implementing the guidelines and I swear, in about a week I was sleeping again! It has now been about a month since I finished reading this book and I'm consistently sleeping 7 to 7.5 hours a night. I used to only get 4-5 so this is a huge improvement, I feel normal again! I no longer need coffee in the morning, I'm no longer anxious when I go to bed because I know I'll sleep well, and I just feel happier overall. I'm so grateful I found this book, and for just $3.99! Also, her guidelines don't require you to buy anything, and in my case, I got relief with just implementing about 6 of her 12 guidelines.If you're having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both, buy this book. It was the best $3.99 I've ever spent.
