The book in well written, genuine and kind. The author writes from a modern day western frame of mind, which can often disappoint. but this book is well done. Examples and references from modern experience are a welcome change from experiences in ancient lands with ancient peoples. No time is wasted on false humility--the author's attitude is, I am going to show you Zen and it is going to change your life. Since no one can remain completely zenlike all of the time, he provides some "positive" behavior programming which will help the reader to do good and always endeavor come from a place of peace. Fluid reading that could change your life, or allow you to see that it is already just fine.

This book was my first introduction to Zen and I'm a full believer already! Overall, I am a pretty healthy person that puts healthy eating and exercise at the top of my list of priorities. I'm also a worrier and live with a lot of stress/anxiety that I completely manufacture on my own. So, this book is pointing me in the right direction to enjoy living each moment to its fullest. Thanks to Ian Tuhovsky for his work in introducing the concept of Zen! Next up for my reading is Buddhism: Beginner's Guide, also by Ian Tuhovsky. :)

Quick read! I appreciated the simple straight forward approach of this book. I would say to the author to proof read again as I came across some minor things. You'll know it when you see it. However, I think this book is excellent and am glad to have purchased it!

The books gives you an in-depth overview of Zen Buddhism. many people misinterpret Zen as a religion, well it's not. Zen Buddhism is all about living your life the "right" way.The author gives specific instructions to practice Zen. I like his personal experiences and stories with Zen.After reading this book, I feel happy, I feel positive and I am absolutely sure, it will do wonders to my overall life as days pass by and I implement what I have learned from this book in my life. This book is an absolute goldmine.5/5

Zen is a well written take action guide to help you slow down and appreciate what's important in life. I like the way the author talks behind the scenes first, easily opening your mind to this "calming" process.Cleared up is the common misconception that Zen is a religion. Which it isn't. And what's so great about it is you get to figure out where it fits into your life. This book shows you HOW to do it. It's up to you to figure out if you're actually gonna do it! Nice stuff!

A short readable book that explains the concepts of Zen in understandable, non-mystical terms. Recommended for the novice wanting to understand the basic concepts.

This is a very solid introduction to a focused and peaceful lifestyle that includes buddhism and meditation. The author chose a good title - Zen: Beginner's Guide: Happy, Peaceful and Focused Lifestyle for Everyone (Buddhism, Meditation, Mindfulness, Success) (Positive Psychology Coaching Series Book 7) by Ian Tuhovsky is written by a real person with good understanding and experience. I like the "Zen Facts" and the clear explanation of meditation. This is a great look into where to begin if you are ready to bring mindfulness into your life. Recommended. Five stars.

Author is very judgemental,I am not interested in his opinions of other people's behavior. No one is perfect and by the way ,what do you eat if killing any living thing is murder plants are living things, how do I know if they feel pain? Nietzsche had some horrible ideas, but he knew one thing...Mankind is a superficially flawed animal group

It's rare that I get so engrossed in a book that I read it all in one sitting, and rarer still for a nonfiction book to do that to me. Yet the pithy, self-deprecating humor in here made me drop everything else for a few hours. I don't generally like political books, but this was fascinating in its perspective - not rehashing every moment of the Obama era but using anecdotes of specific events and then showing how things had evolved to today. The ongoing discussion of the influence of the Internet and then the references to things like Blackberrys and the angst over getting Twitter accounts was a reminder of how quickly things have changed in our world. Even the way the book was put together drew you in, with short chapters and the use of bold face and bullet points in section headings. P.S. The footnotes were hilarious! I wish there were more of them.

Reads like a friendly conversation, sort of like sitting at Pfeiffer’s kitchen table and listening to him offer his perspective on the last decade of his life. Offers personal anecdotes of the Obama presidency that will have you laughing, reminiscing, nostalgic, and hopeful. (The footnotes have my heart)

I've always loved Dan Pfeiffer's mix of humor and analysis on Pod Save America. YES WE (STILL) CAN is the best version of that charm and political thought. This book offers some hilarious (and telling) stories about Dan's time in the White House and what a great boss he had in President Obama, but the book always comes back to a lesson that is relevant to the current tire fire which is the Trump administration. And the cover has Obama dunking on Trump -- you gotta love that!

Hilarious. Inspirational. I thought about calling out sick from work just so I could finish it. Dan offers a unique look into the Obama years, peppered with inspiration, a call more political involvement, and footnotes that are bound to make you laugh. Highly recommend to everyone

Full disclosure: I am a huge Pod Save fan. I was super-excited to read this book, and it did not disappoint. Pfeiffer’s transparency with his mistakes and his triumphs makes for good reading, and the book lays out How We Got Here in a very compelling way. Strangely enough, it also left me with hope. While heinous Republicans may be calling the shots for now, America still has more good people than bad, and we did once elect a good, kind, and intelligent person President. As Obama famously said to Congress after they actually passed a law, “Wasn’t that fun? Let’s do it again!”

So well written, I nearly cried at the end of the last three chapters. I read about a book a month and this is easily my favorite book of the past three years.Dan has hit the absolute perfect balance of storytelling, catharsis, hope and humor. The whole way through, I felt like I had just won an argument with an enemy and gotten high-fives and hugs from all the smartest onlookers. And the footnotes on each page? Super-hilarious.I thoroughly enjoyed the mild snarkiness, but the book is so much more than that. It's an unvarnished inside look into the 2008 campaign, the rigorous eight years of high-stress governing, and the strange election of 2016. Dan's observations are consistently astute and entertaining. If you voted for Barack or like Pod Save America even a little bit, you do not want to miss this!

I was super excited to get a copy of DanPfeifer’s book Yes We (Still) Can: Politics in the Age of Obama, Twitter, and Trump from Twelve Books and NetGalley in return for my honest review. If you know and love Crooked Media and Pod Save America, as I do, you will love this book. If you aren’t familiar with them/him, and you enjoy stories by political insiders, you will love this book. If you are a fan of the 45th President, you probably won’t like it or him/them.Dan Pfeiffer was President Obama's communications director and he currently co-hosts the insanely popular podcast Pod Save America with Jon Favreau, who became Obama’s chief speechwriter despite being in his mid-twenties. These guys have a combination of political savvy and millenial viewpoint that are a refreshing change from the tomes that are churned by the “same old political hacks,”as my friend calls them. After the disastrous (from his – and my—point of view) election of 2016, Pfeiffer was stunned and disheartened, because he had spent years working for Obama, and wasn’t quite prepared for the new Administration. He decided to write about the way politics had changed since Obama’s election in 2008, the role of social media and changing communication methods and styles impacted elections, and how we could keep from going crazy as we try to right the ship.My favorite things about this book, aside from his wicked sense of humor, is the way he works hard to explain why everyone (including him!) got it wrong in 2016, and his advice to Democrats about where we can go from here. This is perfect for people who miss Obama and are appalled/disturbed/frightened by the new President. Four stars.

Our current political reality is a hard pill to swallow, but Dan Pfeiffer at least gives a really funny and digestible personal account of how we got here. The book is motivating and inspiring, and chock-full of fun anecdotes that attest to the brilliance and integrity of Obama and his team. The observations on the (d)evolution of media in the past decade are canny and illuminating, also extremely depressing and worrisome. How can progressive activism best be paired with savvy communications to rise above the overflowing sewer of fake news and right-wing propaganda? While there are no easy solutions, it's at least encouraging to have an insider's view of the landscape and opportunities for change.Do you love reading smart-a**, caustic takedowns of the shameful swarm of low-rent racists and criminals leading the GOP?Are you an energetic progressive in need of validation and peer support for your ceaseless activism and packed protest schedule?Do you love to laugh while secretly crying inside and seething at the tragedy of modern American politics?Read this book!

#20,624 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book had me riveted from the start, the very first page. I'm a 37 year old mom who had her daughter approach her with concerns that she may be anorexic. I can remember reading a book when I was around her age which made the dangers of anorexia and bulimia stick in my mind crystal clear, but cannot for the life of me remember the title. So, off I went on google looking for it, but found Wintergirls instead.I had this read in 24 hours. It isn't a long book for me considering the font size, but it also gripped me that I wanted to read it and find out the rest of the story and how Lia was going to fare and cope with the loss of Cassie on top of dealing with her issues before Cassie passed. The last few chapters had me in a grasp very few books get me into. I in no way can understand how this book would spur someone to not be at least slightly horrified as to what they are doing to their bodies and mental health and continue to carry on with either illness - which they may for a time - but the words and story will stick with them in the back of their minds as it reveals dangers they will continue to think of.Good, gripping and compelling read.

Goodreads Description- “Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.I am that girl.I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit. In her most emotionally wrenching, lyrically written book since the multiple-award-winning Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia’s descent into the powerful vortex of anorexia, and her painful path toward recovery. There have been plenty of books that I have read that I have thought that were really good and have rated them 5 stars. But then occasionally, not that often, a book comes along and absolutely takes your breath away. It makes you sit up and take notice. It also makes you realize that maybe all of the other books that you rated 5 stars were nothing close to the real thing.Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls is exactly that kind of book. This was recommended to me several months ago as part of a book club but for some reason I just didn't get around to reading it. Well I finally started it 2 days ago and when I did I didn't stop reading it until I was done. The characters were so real, so ugly at times, and so raw. The protagonist Lia, is anorexic and has just lost her best friend who died alone in a motel room. Lia is haunted by the fact that she has 33 missed calls from her friend Cassie and feels a great deal of guilt over her death. For Cassie was just as sick as Lia...she died of bulimia. Cassies starts haunting Lia and wants Lia to join her on the other side. To avoid the ghost Lia stops sleeping and starts exercising excessively. She only eats 500 calories a day. her goal weight starts at 95 pounds but each time she meets a goal she makes a new goal of 5 pounds less. Lia grows lanugo, baby fine hair, to hold in her body heat for she is always freezing. Lia cannot read anymore because she cannot thing right to make out the words. Lia has become a Wintergirl, a person lost between both worlds, and Cassie is waiting for her on the other side. There were some ugly facts presented about anorexia. It wasn't pretty. I'm glad Anderson didn't make it pretty. Maybe some teenager will read this book and take a different path.About the supporting characters...there were times I wanted to reach through the books pages and grab the adults in Lia's life and scream "Look at her! Can you not see that she is sick! She needs your attention! Give it to her and get her to a hospital!" But as they say "Denial isn't just a river in Egypt". It was obvious Lia couldn't control her parents divorce, her father's remarriage, her mother's controlling indifference. So she sought control elsewhere. Well she got it. And she so wanted the attention of someone and no adult in her life saw it. The only one who saw it was her 9 year old stepsister who told her friends that Lia had cancer to cover up the truth. It was a sad situation. The climax was so wonderfully written that I could easily imagine it on the big screen. It was beautiful and powerful. This is one of those rare books that really caught my soul. I wish there could be a rating for these special books to differentiate them from all the rest. This is definitely a 5 star book but also so much more. You absolutely must read this book!

It's taken me a long time to read a book by Laurie Halse Anderson....but she's definitely going on the must-read list.In Wintergirls, Anderson does what gives me toe-curls when I'm reading fiction-- an arresting, fascinating unreliable narrator who gives you entryway into what its like to experience the world outside of the "norm."Lia's best friend, Cassie, died alone in a hotel and now Lia's parents are tip-toeing around her, checking up on how much she eats, and forcing her to go to therapy sessions early.Lia plays the dutiful daughter, but Cassie's ghost is haunting her, taunting her about how much she eats. Soon Lia is nuking food in the microwave so the kitchen will smell, but burying the food so her parents won't know she isn't eating. She's painfully aware of the calories in even a tablespoon of cream cheese, and only feels in control when her weight gets closer and closer to her ideal of 95.0 pounds or she's letting loose all the bad feelings and hateful words through slicing her own flesh with razor blades.Wintergirls is written in Lia's inner monologue, crossed out words and all she won't even let herself think (she crosses out "mom" and substitutes "Dr. Marrigan" instead). It's a disjointed, haunting view of seeing the world through a self-hate lens, and Lia's voice will stay with you long after you put the book down. I was fascinated by the ring of truth behind Lia's strategies to fool her parents and also the voices of the other girls online.Probably not a book you'd want younger YA readers to attempt without some talk about anorexia, and self-destruction beforehand. Probably not a path you'd want to walk down if you're feeling emotionally vulnerable, either, as Lia's pain and that of her family is real and un-tempered.
