This is the book I wish existed when I started beekeeping in 2008. Loaded with photos and step-by-step instructions, it's one of the few books that will help you survive your first year, especially if you don't have a mentor. As the co-chair of the Albuquerque beekeepers group (400 strong) for the past 3 years, here's why I think beginner beeks will be especially well-supported by the approach in this book.PROS:- STEP-BY-STEP instructions are included for a variety of beginner tasks like installing a package, lighting a smoker, and conducting your first hive check. Seasoned beekeepers often forget how scary these first steps can be.- PHOTOS, PHOTOS, PHOTOS! Everything from eggs and larvae to wax festooning to varroa mites to Nasonov fanning gets a gorgeous photo. I can't emphasize enough the importance of visual learning when it comes to beekeeping.- A PERSONAL STORYLINE. This book follows the author's experience keeping backyard bees with her family. The good the bad and the ugly details are all included, making for a very forgiving and human narrative.- INTERVIEWS WITH LOCAL BEEKS. Backyard beekeepers from San Francisco to Austin to Chicago are highlighted throughout the book. (I'm on page 47.) The sheer variety of beekeepers presented makes a new beek feel comfortable developing their own unique approach.- A NATURAL APPROACH. Most books I used in my first year were very chemical-centric and solely devoted to Langstroth hives. This book primarily covers Langstroth hives but also discusses top bar hives and pays more than just lip-service to a chemical-free approach.CONS:- Once you have a full year of beekeeping under your belt, you'll want to move on to more substantial reference books like "The Beekeeper's Handbook" or "The Practical Beekeeper."

If you are new to beekeeping, read this book first! Some of the other books are a bit technical and can be confusing. This will give you a good base for starting out. I am a new beekeeper this year and this book got me excited to read more. My husband who hasn't finished a book in years actually read this book in two days. A great find and great information included. I know it will be part of our beekeeping experience for years to come.

Love this book, pictures, little stories, makes it fun to learn beekeeping. This is my first year of beekeeping, my husband has done it years ago so he's giving me some help, but this book will take you through everything you need to know, however, sometimes I need to go to the web to get more detail. Great book, keeps me interested and motivated.

This is a fabulous book for the beginning beekeeper or anyone wishing to be more informed about Honey Bees.The text ,whilst well thought out and professional,is easy to follow and not overly complicated.When a book is written,on any subject,it is easy for the author to loose sight of the fact that they need to explain things that may be second nature to them but difficult for the reader to comprehend. Alethea is sensible of this and does a super job of taking you by the hand through all the steps necessary for you to understand what it is she is writing about.Additionally the illustrations are first rate,some of the best photographs and depictions I have ever seen in one Beekeeping book. A picture is worth a thousand words and these are top notch!It is evident that this is a book that will be very successful...........

Hello,Let me pre-face my review by saying I don't normally write reviews, but, here goes.I had to on this one, because, this book has been wonderfully enjoyed by me and my two kids for many reasons.It is a wonderfully written, informative how to book that takes you through something as daunting to myself as bee-keeping and it has opened up a whole new world of fun possibilities for me and my two kids! Seriously!I bought the book on a whim, for many reasons, one, I like collecting books on crafting, do-it-your self projects, you name it, and.... I always have this goal of farm to table adventures, and bee-keeping is for me the top.... a secret wish that I never thought I'd actually be able to do.Then arrives this book!Firstly, it is really well-written. Not one of those how to books you just thumb through and mark pages...it has great stories about people doing small hives and showing you how you can too! I love that, it is very personal, and you instantly feel part of a fun community. It is easy to understand, and keeps you engaged with facts and everything you need to know-isms without being pretentious, dull, or repetitive. My daughter did a science project on honey bees and how important they are to our eco-system, and she was excited that that information was in there, too, a long with so much more we didn't know. We read the whole book together in just a couple of days, and have started our own plan! We are REALLY EXCITED!!There are a lot of really great photos, and the photos are just beautiful, it is such a picturesque book, and I can't say enough of how the book is just really, really cute, and pretty, I love all the artwork and the layout of the pages, and the way the sections and chapters are organized, it is wonderful to remember it all, it flows really nicely.... It was really fun reading with my kids, and we are excited about starting our own hive this spring, it's really fun to think of all that is possible and involved with bee-keeping, who knew? You have to get this book and find out!!! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in something to read about with their kids, or who loves crafts, hobbys, gardening, and, of course bees!I will definitely be looking for more books from this author!

My husband and I are both new to keeping honeybees, so this book was perfect for us "absolute beginners." It was an easy read (not text bookish), with plenty of photos and diagrams, and seemed to cover all of the basic steps for our first year with honeybees. Of the four books I bought on beekeeping, this is my favorite! I'm sure an experienced beekeeper would want something more involved and advanced, but that's not who it was written for...

I, however, haven't read much in this genre, so I found it fairly useful. It reads quickly, interspersed with relevant, inspiring quotes. The end of each section of essays has "key takeaways," which is nice if you're only reading a few minutes at a time here and there. All of the authors come from respectable fields, so the content is relevant. Lastly, the design is attractive with it's bold red and black title and quote pages--it just looks cool, which is something not often said about the interior pages of a book. I'd recommend it, and, if I lost it, would probably buy it again.

I am picky about recommending books. This one is one I could recommend to anyone. Its is very insightful and useful. Its a quick read and is good for referencing when you need a pick-me-up when your routine drives you nuts. I highlighted a lot of this book. It also has wonderful quotes. The size of the book makes it easy to carry around anywhere. The font is a good size too. It is a quick read. But pace yourself because it has a lot of good information, that you need to absorb. This could even be a good book as a gift to someone. This book is a keeper in my book collection. I will probably keep this near my desk to glance at.

The black, red, and white pages, and the black and white fonts, and the different sized fonts, and the raised and impressed text on the cover (and the little fold out flaps) . . . it’s so visually and texturally appealing.The cons: Umm, can’t think of anything. I wished for more . . . I suppose that’s like a con.Overall, a five-star, must-read, beautiful book!

And bit by bit I'm beginning to feel like I'm rediscovering what I experienced in my week away.For me it's not about finding a way to "get the work done", it's about finding the space to revel in doing what I love. When that happens, the work gets done and done well.If you want to live a different way AND you are in a headspace where you're already committed to making the changes needed, then buy this book. It will inspire and give you some great food for thought to help you on your way. If you're not, don't bother. It's not a magic wand and it won't make a shred of difference. But I urge you to bother, to care, to take the leap, because it really, really is worth it.

I did glean some interesting ideas from this writing. The most interesting insight for me is that if those noted in this book can do it, then I can do it. The reading was somewhat of a rollercoaster, interesting in some spaces and dreadfully boring in some others. Overall the practical of building a routine was hidden in the pontificating of abstract and disconnected thought in many instances. The book is excellent in providing resources for additional investigation of the passages that do interest the individual.

Wonderful story. Love this author.

Cute story, but moved along very slowly. Didn't keep my attention after awhile. I will be donating it to my local library.

Poor qualitu

Generally speaking, this book is *okay*. It's not bad. It's not breathtaking. It's just a story about a group of children on a farm for the summer having conversations about their family and neighbors, and examining their religious beliefs with the mixture of piety and casual curiosity to common to children.It's nothing spectacular, but it's perfectly readable. The characters aren't as vibrant and interesting as Montgomery's other works, and the narrator is nowhere near as captivating as Anne Shirley. That said, for those who enjoy classics and casual stories about everyday life in the early 20th century, this book will be perfect!For myself, I'm glad I read it, but I don't think it's one I'd revisit.

The Story Girl is a wonderful slice of life in a quieter more relaxed time. It is wonderful to read of the fears and triumphs of these great kids. I was touched by how they loved one another through arguments and forgiveness. I was surprised by some of the vocabulary. I think it might be a challenge for modern readers. A lovely book. I'm very glad that it has been brought back to print. Thank you to the publisher for the gift of an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

I will say that one the best things about this series is how it tends to stray from the established stereotypes for the species that have been introduced so far. However, the greatest part of this book is with introduction of the mythical Orc Lord and how monstrous he's portrayed as, but from reading excerpt before chapter 1 tells the tale if his birth not through a truly malicious act, but one from the desire to help his species to survive. Truly the Orc Lord and even the newly evolved Ogre Mages took center stage as being very well written and built as characters. Also, while I understand what Rimuru was trying to do in order to keep those he has sworn to protect safe, it was a bit frustrating in that he needs to remember that he is in a world of fantasy and magic so the rules from his world won't apply in this world.

While his book is in a fantasy setting, one of the main focuses in this book is without a doubt, the ogres. While in and of itself not a bad thing to focus on, all of them are heavily influenced by Japanese culture. From their occupations, weapons, and clothing, everything is distinctly Japanese. For me personally, this annoyed the living hell out of me, I want to read a fantasy book, not some a Japanese like variant. Aside from that, everything just seems to work out for the main protagonist. When trying on armor and clothes “everything fit perfectly and looked great on everyone”, when obtaining armor “the armor matched perfectly and doesn’t detract from the Japanese ogre fashion at all”. Even when fighting the main bad guy of this story, the MC literally uses the very essence of plot convenience to win.Aside from all that, the world Fuze builds is still fantastic and interesting to get to know about, and while I personally won’t be picking up another chapter of this book. If you can past the stuff mentioned above, this series is for you.

First off, let me say that I rather like this novel series. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure in that it is merely comfortable, predictable fluff, but it's at the very least rather enjoyable fluff.My problem with this edition is that the translator quite clearly isn't sufficiently proficient in the English language to write or translate a novel: frequent missteps in grammar and expression make this feel like the work of a moderately talented middle school child."So all and all, the experiments bore a lot more fruit than expected.""If I wanted to grab someone's head and immediately encase it in flames, it'd be possible (albeit a tad toasty).""I tried summoning some electricity between my thumb and pointer. An arc of bluish-white energy danced between them."You get the picture.

The translation is missing a lot of the development and heart of the original novel. Plus often switching the names around erroneously causing confusion and key pieces missing. Makes it impossible to lose yourself in the story.I bought all 4 volumes as I love the original and thought this would be a great way to support the author - but had to force myself to finish this book and don't think I'll bother trying to trudge through volumes 3 & 4. Looks like its back to reading the original 249 chapters separately online.While the original story is a 5 star gem, this translation is a 2 star max.

Fuse's story takes you on an adventure, brings you captivating characters that you will either love or hate. I recommend anyone who love Isekai type stories (or game like stories) to give this one a try!

The second volume begins to give us the depth the characters that are engulfed by Rimurus power and the beginning of a fledgling city created by this slime. As someone who has read a chunk of the webnovel, the light novel takes the limits of that and pushes them farther while refining everything down. Sit back and prepare for a ride with this second volume.

The characters in this are really entertaining and the city building elements are fun. The MC is frustrating. A bit of an idiot. Hopefully he is cured of that in future books.

I love this light novel,I tried the manga.... Just no. So yeah light novel for the win!!! I like it.

Her book is a collection of methods that have been used for class participants. England is quick to point out that this "is not a script or a rigid method," and she encourages parents and professionals to use those portions that are helpful. There are numerous exercises and activities to help parents, especially mothers, be in contact with their bodies and feelings. The author recommends throughout that the mother and her healthcare professional work together, giving numerous suggestions for making this a successful partnership. England has done a fair amount of research and does include numerous references; at the same time, she makes it a very personal book. This was recommended to me by a midwife as I was trying to decide whether to have a unmedicated birth. This book is great for someone who has a very creative mind. For approximately the first half of the book, the author tells birth stories and associates a drawing/writing activity for the reader.But that person is not me, so for the first half of the book I was wondering when I would get to the nitty-gritty. Luckily, it got there! The second half of the book takes you through the labor process and gives great tips/techniques/ideas. I was glad she included how different personality types will handle the situation in different way and tips to help you individually. Also, she is realistic stating that birth will be painful, it will not be easy, but it will be worth it. I really like how it was written, the author made it feel like choosing an unmedicated birth is something we can all do, but never shunned the idea of using drugs.So even though I felt half of the book didn't apply to me, I would still recommend it to others and just tell them to skip that part.

This book was recommended to me by a physical therapist that I saw for a pelvic health class before the birth of our first baby. Her reasons for the recommendation were that the book is a much easier read for some people compared to other pregnancy and birth books and that she liked some of the approaches to preparing for birth (art projects, how your partner can help during labor, mental health and awareness, options for pain management, etc.). We had already decided that our baby would be born in a hospital but the rest of our birth plan was loosely defined when she suggested I try this book as a way to help get useful insight and information to making more of the important plans we needed to decide on.The section on birth art is very long and unless you want to stop and do each of the projects she describes in the book you can skip right past it. The author mentions how much people in her classes are initially skeptical of the art projects but eventually love them over and over and over again to the point that it was quite annoying to me. Rather than bust out art supplies, some of her prompts allowed me to quickly visualize what I would potentially draw or paint but that was as far as I went with the art.Most of the women who's birth stories she mentions are negative, and for a soon-to-be first-time-mom reading negative birth story after negative birth story has scared me to the point that I lost trust in my doctor - who before reading this book I trusted whole heartedly and I appreciate the way she communicates with me and answers my questions at my appointments. My doctor did nothing remotely wrong but this book scared me so much it changed my whole acceptance of her. This book DID teach me that I need to be prepared to advocate for myself or prepare my husband to advocate for me and that it's okay to be definitive with what you want and ask lots of questions during labor if the doctors are pushing some sort of treatment or next steps on you, but on the whole I am more scared for labor than I was before thanks to all of the terrible stories she put in the book. The only positive stories are from the moms that chose home births and natural births. The author lists scientific studies all over the place that support her arguments for having home, natural, and/or unmedicated births. It's great science but for someone like me who has already decided where they will give birth and is just wanting help preparing now that I've made some of my decisions, the information I was given is heavily skewed against me. It's as if the author thinks less of moms who choose the hospital route. There's a chapter on "Why you MUST hire a doula." We aren't because we can't afford one. I didn't appreciate a book that insisted on me making a very specific decision a certain way. There's a chapter on "compassionate pain medication use" and the chapter listed two full pages of *negative* side effects of epidural use and went on to say "Think about how far you've already come before accepting pain management and just keep going!". What was the point in naming the chapter after compassionate pain medication usage if the author clearly feels that pain intervention is the wrong decision? Frustrating to say the least.Ultimately this book taught me a couple things about how I can prepare my head space for labor and delivery but my birth plan simply doesn't line up with the author's preferences or her own personal agenda. Unfortunately because of that misalignment and the author's tendency to describe all of these scary, negative stories throughout the entire book, I feel like I have more work to do to be fully prepared (and hopefully less terrified) for labor now than I did before. We are due in two months and, along with talking to my doctor about my worries, I will be seeking out other books to read before birth in hopes they can counteract the negative/scared feelings I have after reading this book.

This book is great! I wish I would have had it with my first natural birth. It's so reassuring and helpful at relieving the anxiety of child birth. It also has tons of info for birthing partners to help them understand the process of labor and delivery with some great tips on how to react to situations. The author explains everything from cesarean births, to epidurals, to an unmedicated home birth. Do note that this is absolutely pro natural birth... it's encouraging, empowering, and a must read!

I really like some of the philosophy and all of the facts, given by this book.I actually used this method, and a certified "Birthing from Within" trainer to birth both of my children. It really prepares you for the intensity of birth, and makes you feel like a warrior. That you are connected to all of the birthing mothers before and after you. You feel as though you can warrior through it.But, that's just it. I think if I do give birth again, I will read this but I'm thinking of trying hypnobirthing. I want something a bit softer for my next birth. Don't get me wrong, I'm an Aries and love warrior-ing. But birthing is also innately and sacredly feminine; so I want to be in touch with both the softness, and the warrior.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It helped to relieve some of my anxiety about going into labor and had some good ideas about dealing with stress and nervousness. It helped to reinforce my belief that our bodies are amazing and inherently know what to do and that I can give birth naturally. Some concepts were a little out there, even for me, and I feel like I am a pretty crunchy person. It is worth the read in my opinion, and you can utilize whatever parts you find helpful.

I had this set in cassette tapes it was so long ago. It was indeed a pleasure to find them on CD's, and their wisdom and Rabbi Cooper's inner knowledge at their best. Excellent.

Reb. Cooper is a learned and personable teacher with decades of study and experience. This 6 CD set is a gift to yourself, with many layers of learning through stories (midrash), guided meditations, and intentional music (nigun). Reb. Cooper's teachings can bless and change your life if you let them.

I found it useful and inspiring. It helped me out with several issues in my life. I think it's a great audio book and I highly reccommend it. I'm going to be joining The Kabbalah Center very soon.

I thoroughly enjoyed this CD set. Rabbi Cooper has a very likable, gentle persona and has so much good to share about the most significant matters. I've also listened to Rabbi David Aaron's Kabbalah Works: Secrets for Purposeful Living which I also enjoyed. Between the two, Cooper's is the more in depth, in part because it is 6 disks instead of 4, but also because Cooper takes on more complicated aspects of Kabbalah, gives more of a history, explains and uses more Hebrew words, and is generally the more scholarly. Aaron's seems meant for a broader audience in part because Aaron keeps things simpler and his manner is more familiar and folksy, with touches like personal anecdotes and acceptable attempts at humor followed by "just kidding" (he also includes a reference to Woody Allen). I enjoyed both and in fact Aaron's could be a nice introduction and Cooper's for those ready to take on the next level of intellectual, spiritual awareness of Kabbalah (in conjunction with books, discussions, meditation, etc.).Cooper's also strategically intersperses guided meditations to explore the ideas he is talking about, in part because Kabbalah and mysticism generally are primarily modes of experience and the knowledge of direct perception. I couldn't always use these tracks at the time since I was driving (and right now, even when driving, I just do breathing meditation). But for those that are listening somewhere where they can do Cooper's meditations, it would almost certainly be beneficial (meditation is just relaxing and pleasurable anyway). And necessary in that you need the experiential part to really understand Kabbalah.Cooper also includes a few important Jewish, Hassidic folktales ("midrash" apparently) which is quite a nice touch. They are fun to listen to and then Cooper discusses the stories and uses them to illustrate Kabbalah ideas, which will then lead into a guided meditation using those ideas. There is also some nice a capella singing between sections I liked. Another CD set that included more singing and stories might be nice -- in fact, maybe one pitched at children (Kabbalah for Kidz).

JQA succeeded at great emotional cost. In his early 20's JQA fell in love in a relationship that ended unhappily. Several years later, on a diplomatic mission in London, he met and married Louisa Johnson, the daughter of an American expatriate. JQA was frequently distant and harsh and the marriage, while lasting, was difficult. Traub's book amply explores JQA's personal life, his relationship with his parents and brothers, his marriage, and his own troubled relationship with his children.The book covers Adams' long and eventful public career, emphasizing Adams' attempt to balance his overwhelming ambition and his equally powerful sense of integrity and independence. Adams' served a single term as the sixth president (1825 -- 1829). Although he had a vision for a strong central government promoting the American economy and American culture, he found himself unable to work with Congress. His presidency was unsuccessful. Before he became president, Adams had a long career as a diplomat, Senator, and as Secretary of State. In the latter position, he expanded the borders of the United States and, together with President Monroe, was responsible for the Monroe Doctrine in foreign affairs. After his presidency, Adams served in the House of Representatives for 17 years, the only president to serve in Congress after his term in office. Adams became famous for his opposition to slavery and for his opposition to the "gag" rule under which petitions opposing slavery were not allowed to be presented to Congress. During this time, Adams also participated in the defense of African slaves on board a Spanish vessel, the "Amistad". Adams role in this defense has become rightly celebrated. In his courageous support for freedom and criticism of the "slavocracy" Adams showed his independence. He declined to join the Abolitionist movement for fear of civil war but opted instead for a more gradual attempt to rid the nation of slavery. Traub covers Adams' public life, its many accomplishments, and its disappointments, even-handedly, sympathetically and thoroughly.Traub has written an inspiring, accessible study of a figure I have long admired. His book helped me understand what I find valuable in JQA. It is an excellent choice for readers wanting to learn about JQA and the America of his era. For readers wanting more, Fred Kaplan's biography "John Quincy Adams: American Visionary" explores Adams' thought, writing, and intellectual life in greater depth. Although Traub's book is well-documented. and researched, a bibliography and a mention of other scholarly studies of JQA would have been welcome additions.Robin Friedman

Mr. Traub has written an excellent biography of one of the most underappreciated titans of our Republic. Adams was a man of impeccable integrity and clung dearly to his principles of individual liberty, republicanism, foreign policy realism and nationalism, often at the expense of his political fortunes. His life serves as a model to counter the current status quo of of our self-serving politicians. He was a staunch defender of our founding principles and vigorously fought the "slavocracy" with passion and intellectual force.Traub does an excellent job of highlighting this man's virtues, as well as his faults. He has done a tremendous service to a man all but forgotten by history. With the exception of Alexander Hamilton and Mr. Adams' own father , there may not be a man who was so instrumental to our history that receives less credit than he is due. He is without a doubt one of our greatest diplomats and congressmen.

My ongoing project to read a scholarly biography of every American president took a major step forward earlier this month when I discovered a brand-new biography of John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States. Written by journalist and author James Traub, “John Quincy Adams: Militant Spirit” is a masterful example of the presidential biographer’s art. In this superb book, Traub draws a highly detailed and multi-dimensional portrait of John Quincy Adams and the times in which he lived.Born in 1767, John Quincy Adams was the oldest child of John Adams (American founding father and second president) and Abigail Smith Adams. Young John Quincy always strove to meet the high expectations of his parents, both of whom demanded from him not only great scholarly accomplishment, but also behavior of the highest rectitude.John Quincy acquired a first-rate classical education under the guidance of his father. He was keenly intellectual, and, by his own admission, highly reserved, judgmental, and rather cold and aloof – much like his parents. Also like his parents, he was a progressive thinker, and a lifelong, resolute foe of slavery.In his teen years and early adulthood, John Quincy Adams served as his father’s private secretary while the elder Adams was negotiating the Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War. He was well traveled; he served as an ambassador of the fledgling United States to several European countries; all the while continuing his education.He returned home and briefly served as a Senator from Massachusetts. His unpopular stands on several issues led him to leave office before finishing his term. Later in life, he served as Secretary of State in the administration of President James Monroe. He was then elected as the sixth President of the United States, but once again his unpopularity led to his defeat for reelection to a second term. His long political career was not over, though. After he left the presidency, he was elected to the House of Representatives from his home district. He became the only person in American history to accomplish this. He served in the House for eight terms, until his death in 1848 at age 80.Traub examines in detail several key aspects of Adams' life. These include his not always harmonious marriage to Louisa Johnson Adams, a union marked by the tragedies of Louisa’s frequent miscarriages and the deaths of three of their children; Adams’s eloquent defense before the Supreme Court of 44 Africans who had escaped from the slave ship “Amistad;” and his ultimately successful ten-year battle in the Southern (and therefore pro-slavery) dominated House of Representatives against the “gag rule,” which prohibited House members from accepting anti-slavery petitions from their constituents.Traub backs up his supremely readable narrative of John Quincy Adams’s life with impressive scholarship. He relies extensively on John Quincy Adams’s diaries, which run to 51 volumes and over 14,000 pages. Traub also cites other biographical and historical works about Adams and the era in which he lived. Throughout this book, Traub demonstrates a thorough mastery not only of John Quincy Adams’s life but also of the times in which he lived.“John Quincy Adams: Militant Spirit” ranks among the best presidential biographies I have ever read.
