I am a beginner / intermediate web developer and am reading much of this book for a web development class in early 2012. The fact that the professor is still using this book speaks to its quality and applicability, despite the fact that the edition we are using was written in 2006.This book covers a broad range of core web topics such as character sets, XML, HTML, Cascading Style Sheets, JavaScript, and DOM. It was helpful for me, since I had little or no knowledge of half of those technologies before reading this book.The book is more than a simple reference. One of its major strengths is that it also offers sound design advice throughout.Because of the age of the book, there are many references to idiosyncrasies of old browser versions and no mention of newer technologies (e.g. Microsoft Silverlight). However, it's coverage of other core topics were valuable enough for my teacher to still use it and for me to give it a four star rating. If O'Reilly updates this book, I expect the next version to be five stars.

This review refers to the third edition.This isn't an update to the second edition, it is a rewrite. I read the second edition before I read this one, and the 3rd edition is light years ahead. Completely new chapters on CSS and updated references to browsers as new as IE7.What I like most about this book is it will tell you how something is supposed to work, then tell you in which browsers it will and will not work. It's great to have some bleeding edge CSS 2.1 in your code, but if it doesn't work in IE6, do you really want it on your business site?This is not a learning tool (although I picked up quite a lot of tricks and tips). There are other books for this. If you have a good foundation with XHTML and CSS, this is the book to have next to the computer.

The new edition is comprehensive and concise to a degree I have not found in any other web design reference book. Since the first edition this book has grown considerably. This edition, for its concision, could still be described as a reference in a nutshell, but for its comprehensive cover of the most important material to a useful depth, it is more than that. If you are, as I am, often pressed for time while multi-tasking towards the completion of projects on tight schedules, and need the right information quickly, this book will become a treasured tool. This is my, and I recommend that it become your, reference of first resort.

the author knows the subject well, and she writes well. i found myself reading the book for hours, and learning new things in a nice and organized way. if just all books are like that...it is good for beginner and intermediate level. if you are already advanced or guru level, you may find that you know a good part of the material in the book already. but since this book talks about so many aspect of web technologies, unless you advanced in most areas, you probably still find it useful or good to have as a reference.

Worthy of the O'Reilly name, this was a good book that covered many interesting topics. It's contains some good information about web concepts that are of valuable use to programmers, like myself. However, it is not a book on "web programming", so don't expect it to contain any Java-specific information. If you are interested in learning how browsers work, (X)HTML concepts, CSS, a little Javascript, graphics, etc., this book will provide some invaluable information. Also, an excellent reference book.

I really liked this book. It was a great textbook for learning the basics on web design. It provided me some great insight and skills needed to get started.

This is an essential book for any web designer or hobbyist. Don't expect a reference book filled with tables and syntax lists, however. It's more of a learning book than a reference book. But it's still vital for quick look-ups of everything a web designer needs to know, from general style and standards guidelines to rarely used tage.I already had a previous edition of this book, but the 3rd Edition is an important update.

This is a strange book. While it is very detailed and good for a the new student in some areas, in others it assumes a level of knowledge beyond introductory level. JavaScript is the perfect example of this. I understand enough about the topic to know that it is complicated and somewhat difficult to understand/explain in written form. However, for an introductory book, this uses tons of terms it never defines and explains how to perform an operation without explaining the underlying concept. It's okay for getting the work done, but I never really felt like it explained to me what I was doing.

It has been a while since I read it. It is short, 44 pages, but it is well organized, and a good source of information. I wanted information about the No. 4 to No. 8 bench planes, but it has a lot more than that. I recommend it if you want information about Stanley Bailey planes, and other planes based on the Bailey patent.

This is not as detailed and exhaustive a Stanley type study as the "Blood & Gore" website, but it is a handy reference. I'm not sure how accurate the pricing information is - as prices will vary over time. Still, as a quick reference, it's rather handy.

Great Reference Book, I ordered for my Husband's Birthday, we have a Antique, Gift Booth in an Antique Mall and he sells a lot of Stanley tools.

A book that all Stanley Plane collectors will find invaluable. Well written with lots of hints and tips for everyone.

It a nice book but not as detailed as I wanted. I wanted a more descriptive book with more information on all planes made by Stanley. I am just starting in collecting planes I have several Stanley planes Iâ€™m restoring.

Toobin's writing about the Supreme Court is always well worth reading, and this book is no exception. It traces the difficult relationship between President Obama and the Court from its ill-starred beginning to the ambiguous upholding of most of the Affordable Care Act in 2013. At the beginning, of course, Chief Justice Roberts made mistakes in administering the President's oath of office, and the process had to be repeated. And at the end, the Chief Justice astonished many observers by voting to uphold most of the provisions of the ACA. Many felt that this showed an unexpected liberal side to the Chief, but Toobin argues that he was still playing a conservative game, but in a long term context. The book is elegantly organized, basically chronologically but featuring one justice and one issue in turn. The short biographies of the justices are illuminating and very helpful, as is the review of the major cases that came before the court.The book is also strongly opinionated -- moreso than I expected. He argues forcefully that Roberts came to the court with a "conservative" agenda in mind that was at the root the opposite of conservative. The Roberts court, in his view, was on a mission to overturn much of the law settled by Supreme Court decisions from the New Deal on. Toobin argues this compellingly, and argues that it was a radical rather than a conservative approach. I found his arguments convincing, but his political views are in line with my own. A more conservative -- or more Republican -- reader might find the arguments less convincing. Whether or not you agree, however, this book is well worth reading, both informative and thought provoking.

Once again Jeffrey Toobin strikes gold in THE OATH. After reading THE NINE I could not resist reading THE OATH. In essence, THE OATH is the successor to the first book - a continuation of his history of the Supreme Court. Toobin goes about his explanation of the major constitutional issues of the day in a clear and insightful manner. He breaks down the issues so that the reader can clearly understand them. Having just read Toobins chapters on the abortion rights cases, I was better able to understand a recent ruling of the court. These two books have really peaked my interest in the Supreme Court.For all those interested in Supreme Court history and the lives of the individual justice, this is a must read. Toobin also brings to life the manner in which judges are appointed and how one decision, one minor factor can be the deciding factor as to whether or not a person gets a seat on the high court.I an only look forward to Toobin's next book. And if I had to guess, I would guess that it will be on Justice Scalia.

As with all of Kelly's other books I've read this was a very good read. She pulls you into the world of abusive that can happen in Amish communities just as it does in the English ones, the struggle to 'not' blame yourself for everything that happens to you and finding the strength and faith to move on with your life and let yourself be happy again. I am really enjoying this series and would suggest that you read the books in order. Now onto the third book "Through the Autumn Air", can't wait!!

This was an easy to read, down to earth, very realistic book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I was very happy to see it was not about teen love again but about a mature woman with seven children to raise finding a new path in life. Very well written and I enjoyed it very much.

I recently discovered this author. I read all three books in this series and enjoyed all of them. But this one was my favorite. Itâ€™s an unusual Amish storyline that includes abuse. The characters were like able and believable. I definitely recommend it.

I was touched by this story, I felt the hurt and humiliation that Jennie and her children suffered at the hands of an abusive bully, I am so glad that Leo was there for her and her children, I would so much like to know/read more of their life together.

Author Kelly Irvin throws open the doors to domestic violence. For a woman of any culture, it's difficult to overcome the feelings of being unlovable and the pain of deceit. This story takes you in to the fear and begins you to the end with home. Don't pass up this fabulous book.

The past can be a learning experience or a dead weight. Good example of how the past can drag you down or become a learning process. Good reading of trusting God, He does want the best for you.

Couldn't finish this. I hate giving a book a poor review, but this was just another Amish romance. If that's what you like, then you'll love this book.

Great story, written quite well, flow is great. This was different, all people from all walks of life have to deal with abuse. I highly recommend this story to all.

Flynn made Cassie realize that she didnâ€™t give herself enough credit for her talent & career plan. The â€œchanceâ€ encounter between the three of them has given us a terrific start to another great Sullivan series!

Cassie Sullivanâ€™s book starts the third set of Sullivan stories. They live in Maine with their parents Ethan and Beth.Flynn Stewart is a screenwriting friend of Smithâ€™s who needs a place to stay after he discovers his nanny has sold the story of how he came to get his niece Ruby. Smith told Flynn about the cabin his cousin Cassie has in Maine.I liked the book very much. Cassie is a very positive person and sees the good in everything. She gets Flynn to see that heâ€™s not the product of what happened when he was a child. What also made it good was Flynnâ€™s slow transformation to someone who changed from trying to hide himself to someone who was willing to share his background with the Sullivan family.I would definitely recommend this to family and friends. I give it 5 stars.

This is the first story of the Maine Sullivanâ€™s and I can already tell that we are going to fall in love with this whole family. This is Cassie Sullivanâ€™s story and how she meets and falls in love with Flynn Stewart. Flynn is a screenwriter from LA and is friends with Cassieâ€™s cousin Smith Sullivan. When Flynn finds himself needing a place to hide out for a while with his new baby niece Ruby, Smith contacts Cassie to see if they can use her cabin. Of course being the friendly and open person that Cassie is, she says yes. When she meets Flynn and Ruby she instantly falls for the adorable little girl, but of course Flynn is wary and not to nice to Cassie to begin with. The way that the story unfolds and how these two learn to open up and support each other is so beautiful to read about. I love how everyone falls in love with Ruby and welcomes both of them into their family. Watching Cassie teach Flynn how to love and open himself up and let go of the past is heartwrenching. I canâ€™t wait to read about the rest of the Maine Sullivans.

Flynn Stewart is a successful screenwriter who has been running for the past 20 years and he is still running. This time however he is running to Maine to hide from The press and his past as he tries to raise his very young niece he has only had custody of for about a month. He is sent to Maine by his very good friends Smith and Valentina Sullivan so that he can escape and regroup and more importantly focus on being a father to his niece Ruby. Ruby will steal your heart from the first scene she is in!Cassie Sullivan creates sweet confections and she allows Flynn to stay at her cabin as a favor to Smith. She opens the door and falls hard for Ruby and her dad. Cassie has a heart as wide as the ocean and she makes sure Flynn and that baby have what they need before he roughly dismisses her. Cassie is all sunshine and smiles and Flynn is convinced he doesn't deserve her and her brother Rory and father Ethan agree.The Sullivan clan is large, gregarious, loving, loyal, successful and would do anything to protect each other. I want to be a part of this family! Ms. Andre's characters are well written and it's very hard not to fall in love with them. The Maine Sullivan's are no different. This was a sweet story with some darkness that needs to be overcome. I wish I found a love like Ms. Andre writes about. If I can't have a love of my own at least I can live vicariously through the Sullivans and their partners!

Another Sullivan spinoff family, the Sullivans of Maine, with a family similar to the California Sullivanâ€™s. This was a sweet story....literally. Cassie is a candy maker also known as an artist. I must say i did not know this was a profession, but she is part of the Maine Sullivanâ€™s, most of whom still live very close to the parents. Flynn Stewart is an Oscar winning screen writer who finds he is in charge of 6 month old baby girl, and needs to get out of Hollywood for her sake. By way of the California Sullivanâ€™s, he finds out that Cassie will rent him a cabin in the woods of Maine to help him hide from the paparazzi. Flynn has a lot of issues, baby Ruby is adorable, and Cassie wants to love them both. With the help of her family, Flynn sees a different way of life from the one he was running from. Although I love Sullivan Family stories, and Bella Andre is a wonderful storyteller, this book lacked something for me. I almost felt as if everything went too smoothly and easily for this HEA. I am not sure if I wanted more angst of more depth, but it lacked that something for me that made this story great. Another good story, just not my favorite.

The title is misleading, as the author tells two stories and tries to converge them with the latest Louisville scandal and capitalize on the lightning rod that is Pitino's name. The most enjoyable aspects of the book recount the rise of Jurich and the University of Louisville's athletic program from a laughingstock to a multi-million dollar enterprise, where Pitino is a character in the success. The other portion of the book provides solid research into the latest NCAA scandal and dirty games of college basketball recruiting, where Christian Dawkins takes on a persona of a self-important wannabe insider/agent.Overall, the book is a quick and enjoyable read, but the story is shallow for a topic of this magnitude and felt rushed to the printers, as there could have been several additional chapters on the corruption within the recruiting cycle.

Whoever decided to title this book should have realized that Pitino and Christ have little in common after reading the salacious testimony given during his first trial. Nevertheless, Sokolove is pretty evenhanded in his treatment of Pitino who evidently adopted the "I want to know nothing" attitude regarding the money funneled to elite recruits' families from shoe companies through middle men. This has been an open secret to anyone who follows college sports for years. Thanks to the author for helping us understand the present confusing trial. And never fear, fans, we will still be able to wager our 10 billion on the NCAA tourney this year. Neither the NCAA, the universities, the coaches, agents or shoe companies want to break their golden eggs.

As a former professional in a D1 school and parent of a current D1 hoops assistant, I have read this book 3 times as the federal case has progressed. And, I have 'assigned' it to my son and his young cohort of colleagues - in the hopes they remain committed to the STUDENT-athlete but with eyes wide open.

Bought this book for my husband who is from Louisville and used to follow U of L basketball before all the scandals became public knowledge. It arrived at a time when he was swamped with work, but he couldn't resist reading a little of it whenever he had time. He enjoyed it and said he would read it again.

It lays buried deep in the Vatican archives, this encyclical, though one paragraph was found and made it to this book.

This is a fascinating history of the papacy of Pope Pius XI and his opposition to Fascism and Nazism. He charged Father John LaFarge to draft the encyclical that might have seriously curtailed the persecution of the Jews during WWII. Due the machinations of the Vatican hierarchy it was never published as he died before he could press the issue of publication. Until I read this book as a Catholic I knew very little about Pius XI as he was overshadowed by Pius XII, John XXIII and John Paul II. Turns out he may have been more courageous than all of his successors combined.

I have read many books on history in my life, but had never read anything about Pope Pius XI. I came away from reading this book with a sense of profound admiration for him as well as great sadness that the efforts to decisively condemn the regimes of both Hitler and Mussolini that he was making at the end of his life were being effectively sabotaged.

Linsey started us off with some known characters (from dragonâ€™s gift: the protector) but a few years fast forward.Bree is a very likeable character, life has thrown her a lot of lemons, but together with her sister Ana sheâ€™s making lemonade (having a succesful business).Unfortunately to keep that business and to stay protected, they had to put their trust in the wrong guy, who betrayed them.Enter a race against the clock to save her own life and that of her sister.Luckily they get help in the form of an old friend (Cass) and the Undercover Protectorate if they dare to reach out and trust.I found the character- and worldbuilding, the use if mythological figures, the flow of the story amazing and intricate, the story pulled me in and didnâ€™t let me go until I was finished again.I find that this author has a way with words, at times I hold my breath and at others I snort with laughter.I can only urge you to read it, because I believe that you will love it as much as I did.

I read all of The Huntress, Seeker, and Protector series. I was looking forward to this series when Bree and her sister Ana were introduced in that World. But in this first book of the new series, I just wasn't feeling the personalities of the sisters and the love interest, Cade.Yes, it's YA--just like the previous series. And the two sisters are apparently powerful (although as yet they don't now how powerful). And the love interest shown this far is a hunk, and also powerful. But the sisterly relationship wasn't that believable, and I didn't feel the potential romance.But I do like the historical locales, the magic, the many supernatural species (especially the 3 ghost pugs), and the action. I wasn't impressed enough to continue to the next book at its current pricing, but I'll put Book 2 on my Wish list and consider purchasing it if it goes down in price.

This is a quick and fast-paced read, an adventure story filled with magic set in Scotland and Italy, the main character's reliable and collected (always a narrator I appreciate.) There's action throughout the book and lots of fighting sequences.Not really any romance which was smart, the book is way too short to introduce a romance since the largest chunk of the story is only played out over a few days. Though, Bree and the Celtic war god spend most of the book together so there's that.I liked the writing style and characters. Not sure if I'll continue the series as I don't necessary feel attached to the story, but I did enjoy it as a quick read.

I confess I haven't read a lot of urban fantasy, but took the plunge. I wasn't disappointed. It starts off in the thick of things, with the outlaw sisters battling sand monsters in the desert. From there the action keeps on building. I liked the characters, and was definitely curious to learn more of their origins (they're Unknowns, but what exactly? Even they don't know.) There's a bit of a love interest there, too, but it's not eating up all the oxygen in the story, so that's appreciated. The author also has a nice way with words in describing all the settings of the magical cities, the desert, the Scottish Highlands and Venice. It's kind of an Indiana Jones meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with the history and the badass female protagonist. Also appreciated the author's little additional note at the end, explaining in some greater depth some of the entities and locations encountered. (There was a real Vampire of Venice, etc...) A fun read and I'll definitely check out more of Linsey Hall's other works, including this series.

Love, love, love this first installment of Bree's story! I found Bree and her sister Ana very interesting characters in Nix, Cass and Del's series, and was thrilled when LH gave them their own series! I've been eagerly anticipating the release of this first book and it didn't disappoint!Cade is beyond hot, which I wasn't sure was even possible after the incredibly sexy Aiden, Roarke, and Ares from the original three Dragon's Gift series. But LH definitely pulled it off! Bree and Cade are as unique and interesting as believable individuals as Cass/Aiden, Del/Roarke andThe characters truly feel alive, the plot is intriguing and the writing flows smoothly and effortlessly. I can find myself getting lost in the book's world and story! I have read literally tens of thousands of books, so I can be difficult to please, but I found this book utterly absorbing and delightful! Really looking forward to the next installment of Bree's story!

Hall's characters in this book use language really well, and it's fun to read their dialogue. She's really quite a good writer. But this book felt so rushed, and while parts of it were fun, it just felt underdeveloped. There was not a lot of backstory, or details, heroes just rushed in without much explanation, there was not a lot of internal dialogue, and the sister relationship was not developed much at all. It was fun and quick to read, but it just felt so 'lite.'

This was so much more than I expected. The beginning of the book had be a little confused with the madmax kind of opening but it is amazing. Bree is seriously sassy and strong, the type of character that kicks butts and asks questions later. I love seeing how devoted she is to her sisters, despite all the stuff she has gone through. Then there is Cade. Whew is he hot in a scary but super strong kind of way. I wasn't bored at all, and I really loved the world created in this book, especially since it interconnects with previous series but also stands alone on its own.

What a good book. I thought that the Dragon series was good but this may be even better. I certainly hope that this series goes as long as the last one. This book has a really good female protagonist that has some issues. She and her sister go on a quest to beat an evil magician. In the quest she meets up with a good looking warrior who helps them out. There is plenty of interplay between the two characters. It was one of those books that you didnâ€™t want to put down and I was sorry it ended. Looking forward to the next one.
