The story of a Papal Encyclical, written by the courageous Pope Pius XI, which never made it to the eyes of the world. It is said that it would have prevented the deaths of thousands of German Catholics and Jewish people, so strong was the language he used against National Socialism and Mussolini's Facism, both ideologies born out of hatred of another race or religion. An American Jesuit helped him to write it.A famous author was this Jesuit, who wrote against racism, and, stood at the side of Martin Luther King...as he delivered his ' I have a dream' speech. It lays buried deep in the Vatican archives, this encyclical, though one paragraph was found and made it to this book.
This is a fascinating history of the papacy of Pope Pius XI and his opposition to Fascism and Nazism. He charged Father John LaFarge to draft the encyclical that might have seriously curtailed the persecution of the Jews during WWII. Due the machinations of the Vatican hierarchy it was never published as he died before he could press the issue of publication. Until I read this book as a Catholic I knew very little about Pius XI as he was overshadowed by Pius XII, John XXIII and John Paul II. Turns out he may have been more courageous than all of his successors combined.
I have read many books on history in my life, but had never read anything about Pope Pius XI. I came away from reading this book with a sense of profound admiration for him as well as great sadness that the efforts to decisively condemn the regimes of both Hitler and Mussolini that he was making at the end of his life were being effectively sabotaged.

I was only after the whole story, but there were just too many details that after a while, I just skimmed through the last chapters. Very informative, though.
Caught my attention right away. Informative and revealing.
Good read, but misleading cover. Do not want to be a spoiler, however the cover should state how an American Jesuit tried to help the Pope.
