Makes you look at our cities in a different darker light. Must read for christians who have an interest in the physical manifestation of fallen man's intellect through architecture. Or theory thereof. Now I think i understand why we haven't evolved more architecturally. Still following classical styles keeps us in the dark. Innovation, breaking away from the past and it's symbology should be encouraged to new wave of Christian builders that celebrates life, love and the true light of the world. That is of course if they can get them approved through the existing establishment. In time....

Excellent book. Great info and lots of pictures to prove what he talks about. This is the best book I have read on the subject. Worth buying you will not be disappointed. The book is from a Christian perspective. I like how he backs up what he says with all the evidence by pictures.

A treasure trove, very comprehensive

The pictures and commentary in this "encyclopedia" speak volumes about the history and significance of hidden or occult meanings. Although Codex Magica (his former book about occult symbols and signs) may have had some examples that were merely coincidental to masonic/occultic handsigns (think of the diablo handsign), the pictures in Mysterious Monuments of deliberately planned, well-engineered architecture and monuments leave much less room for coincidence.Some of the pictures in this book such as a Catholic church service in front of an all-seeing eye are sadly convincing that many innocent people don't know the meaning behind these symbols. Mysterious Monuments informs the reader of the history, significance and purpose of such monuments as the obelisk and all-seeing eye. For myself, reading through Mysterious Monuments accomplished what I believe it was intended to do-which is to stir people up to think critically about this world. Why does the New Age movement parallel Albert Pike and Helena Blavatsky? Why did Henry Ford receive a high award from Adolf Hitler? Why did the US let German scientists continue their work with Operation Paperclip? At the very least, this book started prompting me to ask questions such as, "Why isn't the Washington Monument direct in its visual representation. Of all the boundless creative possibilities, why was an obelisk chosen?"Obviously there is a deeper level in the world than is portrayed across popular culture and Mysterious Monuments is a great place to get a solid visual reference on many of the deeper/hidden thoughts and intentions that are encoded in architecture.

Albert Einstein THE COMPASS ONE DAY IN 1884 Mr. Hermann Einstein came home from work carrying a small package. It was a present for his five-year-old son, Albert, who was in bed with a cold. “I thought Albert would enjoy this compass,” he said to his wife. “He’s such a serious boy.” “A compass!” Mrs. Einstein took the strange-looking present and examined it closely. It was a tiny round box with a glass lid. Under the glass, a needle swung on a pivot or pin in the center of the box. One half of the needle was colored dark. The bottom of the box bore the words North, East, South, and West. “Now watch the compass work,” said her husband. Slowly he turned the compass in one direction, then in another. “See how the needle spins around? No matter which way the box is turned, the dark end of the needle will point to the north.” It did indeed! Mrs. Einstein watched with interest as her husband turned the compass. Now Mr. Einstein continued. “All you have to do is move the compass so that the word North is under the dark end of the needle. Then you can tell the other directions easily.” Mrs. Einstein was delighted. “Albert loves puzzles,” she said, “and that’s a puzzle if I ever saw one.” “Then this compass should keep him busy for hours,” said Mr. Einstein. Mrs. Einstein laughed. “You’re going to be a busy man, Hermann. Have you forgotten all the questions that Albert will ask?” Mr. Einstein pretended to groan. How well he remembered! Most of the time Albert was so quiet that people hardly knew he was about. When he was puzzled about something, however, there was no end to the questions he could ask. Then Mr. Einstein began to laugh. “It will be a good joke on me, Pauline. I suppose I might as well take the compass in to Albert now and face his questions.” “Yes, Hermann, and I’m going with you. I just know Albert is going to be a great professor someday. I would like to hear what he thinks of this compass.” A STORY FOR ALBERT The Einsteins were a Jewish family who lived in Munich, Germany. There were four persons in the family—Mr. and Mrs. Einstein, Albert, and his three-year-old sister Maja. Mr. Einstein’s brother Jacob lived with them, too. There was also a fat green parrot named Laura, who thought she was boss of the Einstein home. Laura talked all the time. Sometimes Mr. and Mrs. Einstein said she was a nuisance, but Albert loved her. Laura was talking now as Mr. and Mrs. Einstein approached Albert’s room. “Somebody’s coming! Somebody’s coming!” she said in a loud voice. “Oh, Laura, it’s only Father and Mother,” Albert said with a smile. “Your father has a present for you, Albert,” Mrs. Einstein said. “A compass!” “What’s a compass?” asked Albert. “What’s a compass?” repeated Laura. Mr. Einstein turned to the parrot. “Quiet, Laura. Let Albert enjoy his present.” “Quiet, Laura!” the parrot repeated loudly. “Laura’s a bad girl. Tsk, tsk, tsk! Take her out of the room.” “That’s a splendid idea.” Mrs. Einstein picked up Laura’s cage and started for the door. “Poor Laura!” Albert laughed. “Noisy Laura,” said Mr. Einstein. “Bad bird!” Laura wailed. “Bad bird!” When Mrs. Einstein returned to the room, father and son were bending over the compass. Albert’s questions had already begun. “What’s a compass for? How can a needle in a box tell which way is north? Why does the needle turn around?” “Questions, questions, questions!” Mr. Einstein shook his head laughingly. “Maybe if I tell a story, it will help you to understand how a compass works.” Albert’s brown eyes lighted up with joy. There was nothing that he loved better than a story. “Yes, Father, please do.” He snuggled back in his pillows and waited for the story to begin. Mrs. Einstein pulled up a chair and sat down. “Well,” Mr. Einstein began, “once an old woodsman named Hans lived deep in a forest not far from Munich.” “Was he very old?” asked Albert. “Very old,” his father repeated, “but even though he was very old, he never had learned how to find his way in the forest.” “My goodness!” cried Mrs. Einstein. “A woodsman who couldn’t find his way in the forest would certainly be in a fix.” Mr. Einstein nodded. “Poor old Hans was in a fix all right. He had been lost more times than Albert can count.” “I can count to a hundred,” Albert said. “I know you can, son, and Hans had been lost more than a hundred times. Each morning when he left the house, Mrs. Hans would worry and worry. Sometimes it would be days before Hans could find his way home. His wife would think, ‘Oh, my, this time my Hans has surely been eaten up by a bear.’ ” “Of course, she would,” agreed Mrs. Einstein. “I’m glad you’re not a woodsman, Hermann, or I should worry, too.” “Aha, but I wouldn’t get lost!” Mr. Einstein said. “I’d have a compass to tell me the direction I needed to go.” “So that’s what a compass is for!” Albert exclaimed. “To keep you from getting lost!” “Right!” said his father. “It’s exactly what Mrs. Hans decided to get for old Hans. One day she came into Munich and bought the best compass she could find. She wasn’t going to have Hans getting lost anymore. Then what do you think Hans did?” “He asked how the compass worked,” laughed Mrs. Einstein, “just as Albert did.” Albert giggled. His mother was teasing, of course. She and his father often teased him about his questions, but they always did their best to answer them. “Well, Father,” Albert said, “how did the compass work?” “Hans thought ghosts were making it work,” his father said. “He said spirits swung that needle back to the north when he turned the compass around.” Albert and his mother laughed. What a foolish fellow Hans was! Everybody knew there were no such things as ghosts. “Mrs. Hans knew better, however,” Mr. Einstein went on. “She had asked the storekeeper to tell her about the compass when she bought it, and this is what he said.” Albert sat up in bed and Mrs. Einstein pulled her chair closer. They wanted to hear what the storekeeper had said. “A compass needle is really a magnet,” Mr. Einstein said. “Of course!” Albert said, nodding his head. “I’ve seen a magnet. Mother uses one to pick up needles from the floor when she sews.” “That’s right, son,” said Mr. Einstein. “Now every magnet has two ends. One end is called ‘north’ and the other ‘south.’ If you put the north ends of two magnets together, they will fly apart. Two south ends will do the same thing.” “What about a north end and a south end?” asked Albert curiously. “That’s the strange thing,” replied his father. “A north end and a south end attract each other.” “What does that have to do with a compass?” Mrs. Einstein wanted to know. “Well, my dear, this is the part that is hard to believe. It’s the part that old Hans couldn’t believe at all. The earth itself is a big magnet. Any small magnet, when it isn’t fastened, will begin to turn. It will turn until the south end of the magnet is pointing north.” “My goodness!” cried Mrs. Einstein. “It makes one feel odd to think that we’re living on a big magnet, doesn’t it?” Mr. Einstein and Albert both laughed. Still, they agreed that the idea did make them feel a little strange. “Go on,” said Albert. “Tell us more about Hans. Did he ever learn to use the compass?” “Yes, finally, but not until he had had a very bad fright. One day he was out chopping wood. Suddenly a big bear came up to him, just as Mrs. Hans had always feared.” “Did the bear chase him?” “It certainly did. Old Hans ran and ran. Finally he lost the bear.” “By that time I’ll bet Hans was really lost, too,” said Mrs. Einstein. “He was,” said Mr. Einstein. “At last when he found his way home, he was a mighty tired and hungry man. He decided that even if spirits did make the compass needle turn, he’d rather trust the compass than get lost again.” “So this time he listened to Mrs. Hans?” Mrs. Einstein asked. “Yes, indeed. She showed him how to use the compass, and he never got lost again.” “Oh, my goodness!” Mrs. Einstein jumped from her chair. “Your story was so interesting that I almost forgot our supper! I hope it hasn’t burned up.” Fortunately, supper wasn’t burned. Mrs. Einstein brought Albert’s supper to him on a tray. She had cooked chicken and dumplings, one of Albert’s favorite dishes. She had also made a big cherry tart. After supper, Albert looked at his compass. “It certainly is strange about the earth being a magnet,” he thought. “I wonder what makes it a magnet? Father didn’t explain that.” He turned the compass around in his hands and watched the needle swing always to the north. “Father didn’t explain how the magnet became a magnet, either,” he thought. “I guess I’ll have to ask him.”

This book was well reviewed and I was very disappointed. Even if it's written for poor readers, does it have to read like Dick and Jane? Children are young, not simple-minded. Give kids real literature or they won't keep reading, they'll plug in to the media.

My 10-yr old granddaughter was engaged by this biography of Albert Einstein. She was struck by the fact that Einstein was considered dull as a student. She knew of him only as a brilliant mathematician. She is inspired by the story of a boy who appeared to be unsuccessful in grade school and yet who made a huge success of his later life by pursuing his passion. She loved the book.

I never read these things. The cover alone shouts heed me for I am a delight. But the Duplass Brothers are natural storytellers, on the written page as well, not to mention independent / indywood film royalty of Swanberg and Gerwig proportions (huh?) -- what I did not expect is to like them so damned much. They are people. At points it reminded me of a good interview with Peter Farelly in which the man simply holds forth. It feels like I am being spoken to by two buddies who have acquired wisdom. That they would sleep in the same bed as children and tell each other they love each other before lights out reminds me of my sweet children, and their advice could prove invaluable to young filmmakers obsessed with pricey cities and overly large sets. BTW - I LOVE Hoop Dreams and Rocky and watched all those replays of "Children of a Lesser God," "Ordinary People," and "Kramer vs. Kramer" and all those "too early" dramas just like these guys, when HBO just played in the backdrop - not to say I didn't love "Flash Gordon" with the Queen soundtrack as well ... they don't mention it, but they should, what an adorable mess.

There is something for everyone, and I think that everything in this book is for you.I found out about this book listening to the comedian Pete Holmes' podcast You Made It Weird with Mark Duplass (Here's a link if you're interested http://youmadeitweird.nerdistind.libsynpro.com/mark-duplass-returns). I'm not one to read what I expected to be a (dual?) autobiography, but that is simply not what the Duplass brothers have delivered. It is what I can most excitedly describe as a charcuterie of content; they share with us childhood stories, tales of movie-making misadventures, and apt life advice. I can't help but welcome every story they tell into my heart, and they do it all with an unmatched comedic voice (that they share!) which leads me to tell you that, even if you HATE every topic they discuss, I think this book will pull at your heart in ways that tales like these really never do. I am enriched by these *Dupes* more than I could have ever expected. Skip your Starbucks for the next two mornings and buy this book right now.

This was a funny, fast read. Even if you aren't a filmmaker or screenwriter, you'll enjoy reading about two close brothers working together. If you are a screenwriter or filmmaker, you'll love their chapters about how their career unfolded. A lot of the film stuff has been already said at panels in SXSW: "The Calvary Is Not Coming" and in essays and interviews. Google them, read the articles, find the short film "This is John" (it's on YouTube) and then watch The Puffy Chair if you haven't yet. One of the best books about film since Robert Rodriguez' Rebel Without a Crew but/and it's not only a film book -- some chapters are just about their lives, their families, their dreams, silly things. They spend quite a while trying to whittle down their top 10 films. (Spoiler alert -- my only complaint about the book is Joe vs. the Volcano) but apart from that, these are wise and funny guys and you should read their book, see their movies and drink their Kool-Aid.

I don't read much, nor do I write reviews very often, but this book blew me away. I love the Duplass Brothers, not only in what they create but also in who they are. Coming from a family of four brothers, I know what it's like to create films and music with siblings; tense yet beautiful and honest. This book reminds me that the road isn't easy to become a filmmaker but people like Jay and Mark are kind enough to help us out. Many folks become successful and forget what's like to be the little guy but this book gives me hope that I'm not too far off the path. I feel like I've got 2 new brothers. Thanks fellas.

I really enjoyed this book. I like the writing style of the brothers, and all the different topics they cover in this book. You really get a sense of the kind of people they are by the way they write and the things they write about. Some of it is random, but there is also a lot of information about writing and (particularly) filmmaking that could be very helpful to new writers and filmmakers.It's a fun and quirky, often sentimental, and sometimes scary, journey into the hearts and minds of these two amazing, talented, loving men. I really wish I knew men like these two.

First off, when is the Gene movie coming out!!??In all seriousness, The Duplass Bros have been a huge inspiration for me. They have carved out a niche for the anti-Hollywood filmmaker would benefit to follow. Making small films, with big hearts, for not a lot of money. Books like this are so necessary for aspiring creatives and all the generous details they provide about navigating the industry is invaluable. On that note, My goal is to get them to executive produce my documentary premiering at Sundance this year (I won’t even ask for a general before hand).

I'm an actor/writer/producer trying to get a webseries off the ground. I was searching for some solid filmmaking advice and my aunt and uncle saw them on PBS saying their book was about to come out. It was bittersweet and healing to read and is well infused with heart, humor, and solid advice. I hope to work with either of them one day!

I really enjoyed reading Like Brothers. An interesting look inside the world of Jay and Mark Duplass. Being a fan of The League, I was more familiar with Mark’s work as an actor. If you liked The Puffy Chair or any of their other work, as actors, directors or writers, I recommend reading Like Brothers.
