This story is such a difficult one to read. To view Alton's account of his life and how He and his family suffered because of broken relationships, abuse and dreadfully inadequate resources is painful. Also to know there are many others like him all around us who have not found a way out of these cruel circumstances is a wake up call to our society to invest more time and loving action on behalf of these kids. Yet Alton shares his story honestly and is such an inspiring example of overcoming all these huge obstacles to go on to become a wonderful ,positive contributing blessing to others. This is a great motivational story no matter what our life work is everyone can benefit from reading this book.

Buy this book!! Alton Carter is a phenomenal guy, and you will love him after reading this book. I am the same age and I grew up in the same town he wrote about. Alton is as genuine in person as he is in his book. Overcoming adversity is something we all face at one time or another, but Alton does this with more courage than anyone I know. Alton will inspire you to make a positive difference in a child's life, just as caring adults have made in his.This is a must read!

This author told his story so well. You can't help but to read this book in one sitting. If you have ever wondered what it is like to be a child in the "system" and have asked the question "How did that child get there" this is the book you need to read! His 2nd book, Aging Out, is another must read if you want to know the story of these kids! His story is one of many!

I'm glad I read this book (on my Kindle). It was autobiographical, and Carter is not the best writer, but his experience came through and I felt his pain and struggle. I'm thrilled he wrote his story and is working with youth to make things better. No kid should suffer in a place that is supposed to help him or her.

A must read for every adult that impacts the lives of young people. Walking in Alton's footsteps will invoke reflection, repentance and resolution.

Not an easy read but certainly a story that needs to be told. A sad story with a happy ending that could make a difference in lives of others.

This man and his story are one of the most inspirational and amazing things I’ve experienced so far while working with children in the mental health field. I’ve actually given my copy away to a young client and plan to order another one!!!

It was a very good book to read and learn how blessed we are and understand why these kids grow up and think the way they do. It is very sad to know they grow up in these conditions and think it is the way of life. I am sharing this book with my grandkids so they will see how fortunate and blessed they are and maybe some day, with God's help, they can give one of these kids an ounce of hope and love to keep on going like Alton. May we all have that opportunity!

THIS SERIES ISN'T WHAT YOU EXPECTI think it's safe to say that if you're reading this review, you've seen the How to Train Your Dragon movie. This book series is nothing like that movie. The movies follow a vastly different plot than the book series. I wanted to read about Toothless the fierce and lovable rare Night Fury dragon, but the books describe Toothless as a common tiny dragon (about the size of a house cat) who is actually rather stubborn and selfish. At first I didn't like that at all. By the time I got to the second book, I was really enjoying the books as they were written and not as I expected they should be.Contrary to what you believe, the Isle of Berk is not attacked by dragons constantly. The Vikings that live on Berk actually have dragon pets. In order to become a member of the tribe, you have to capture and train a dragon (typically by yelling at it very loudly). Hiccup has the unique ability to understand the dragon language and decides to talk to his dragon instead of yelling at it. The book series is a collection of Hiccup's memoirs.The series consists of 12 primary books and 5 supplemental books. I only read the 12 primary books:PROSPlot - Each book was had its own stand aloneplot. There was no overarching plot that carried itself from book to book. The plots were straightforward and adventurous. Being a middle grade series, they were somewhat predictable, but that didn't deter from my enjoyment. In fact, I feel like middle grade novels should be predictable so that young readers can develop the skills used to predict outcomes based on given context.Humor - These books were adorably funny. Between traditional slap-stick humor, funny quips between characters, and silly side narrative, I actually found myself laughing out loud (which is definitely something I don't do often enough). I think it's safe to say that any child who reads this book will find themselves laughing out loud, too.Narration - I don't mean the narrative of the series. I mean the actual narration. I listened to the audiobooks. In fact, the original reason I chose to listen to these books in the first place was because they were narrated by one of my all-time favorite actors - David Tennant (Doctor Who, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Jessica Jones). This series was an absolute delight to listen to. Mr. Tennant was an extremely immersive narrator. His character voices, enthusiasm, and interpretation of the text were wholly entertaining. His native Scottish accent definitely added to the immersion, as well.Concept - It's hard to read this book pretending you never saw the movies or TV show. I often felt that this series felt a little derivative, but of what? Of itself?! When you take a few steps back and look at this series, it's pretty obvious that it's a very original concept. Sure there are other books about a boy befriending a dragon to fight a threatening villain, but this series doesn't have that feel to it. This book is about a boy who needs to figure out that he can rule the tribe, but at the same time break away from the idea that Vikings are supposed to be cruel and intimidating. I've never read a light and fluffy book that takes place in Viking territory - you don't tend to think of "light and fluffy" when you think of Vikings. I loved the idea that all Vikings had pet dragons that they controlled using fear and aggression, but Hiccup allowed his dragon to choose whether or not he wanted to help (being a stubborn dragon didn't help, but in the end Toothless would help anyway). I feel like the main themes to take away from this book are bravery, kindness, and friendship.Modularity - Each book could have been read in any order. The author would remind you of any pertinent information you should have remembered from previous books. I believe that this is worth mentioning because any child can read any book and not feel lost or discouraged or overwhelmed. Since each book was episodic, they read as companion novels instead of serial novels. It's important to note that there are some installments that vaguely relied on events from the previous book, but it wouldn't have deterred me from reading it out of order (say if my library had a hold on one).CONSNormally I like to lay out Pros and Cons, but I struggled to find something that I didn't like with this book (obviously after I got over that they weren't like the movies). This series was a lot closer to a 4.5 star rating, but since I don't give half stars I left it at 4. The only reason I didn't give this series 5 stars is because even though this was a middle grade series, the situations the characters got themselves in (and out of) where convenient and scientifically unrealistic. While I feel that these are good thing for middle grade stories to have, it just wasn't something I always got on board with. There were quite a few times I found myself saying "Really?!" or "That's not how it works..." and even "The force of that impact would have killed him". I don't feel right holding that against the series because it's purely personal preference and quite possibly the result of me being ridiculous and jaded.OVERALLOnce I got over the fact that the movie strayed vastly from the book (the only things they had in common were names), I really enjoyed this series. It was funny and action packed. This is a fantastic series for young readers. Unfortunately, if you're looking for a novelization of the movie, I wouldn't read this series. There's actually a whole series of books based on the TV show (Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk), which might be more up your alley if that's what you're looking for.The books were very fast reads. I found myself immediately starting the next book each time I finished with one. The great thing about fast reading middle grade books is the feeling of accomplishment that young readers will feel when they close the cover of their book and immediately reach for the next one. Nothing motivates young readers more than being able to see their accomplishments and feeling pride in achieving a goal.

The story is great. HOWEVER (and it's a big however) the Kindle version is not actually a Kindle file like you're probably used to getting when you purchase an e-book. Instead, this is much more like reading a PDF on your Kindle, with pictures of the pages of the book. This means it's a set size and you have to try to grow or shrink it like a picture instead of being able to use the text size buttons on your device. It makes a ridiculous reading experience and frankly, I'm amazed Amazon allowed a major publisher to hoodwink people like this with a so-called electronic version of their book. Cause it's crap.

My 6yo daughter is at that awkward stage(for me as her book buyer:), where the 'leveled readers' are too easy and short for her and I am struggling to figure out what books are too old or too young. Since she loved the movies based (loosely) on this series I thought we'd give it a try. After all, I knew she would eventually grow into them if they were too hard for now. Well they are PERFECT. The style is so engaging that even though she informed me she wouldn't be ready for chapter books until she is 7 (?!?!- kid logic), after reading the forward she was pulled right in. Nice big words and adjective and adverb laden sentences to really keep a kid's interest. One caveat- the humor does involve giving people meaner names than you want your 6 year old to call people, so a quick reminder chat about what is okay to call people in real life is a good preventative.The format is great too, it's a little larger than your 'standard' paperback and the paper is very soft and flexible, so it turns out to be easy for little hands to hold while reading it. There are cute drawings on a few pages and the font itself is large. (This also is nice for those older readers- Grandma forgot to bring a paperback on vacation and borrowed the first dragon book- it is much easier on her eyes than the standard book font.)

So, let me tell you about the Kindle version of this book. The book itself is WONDERFUL. But the kindle edition? Don't waste your money. Here I am, legally blind, in love with the HTTYD movies, and excited to read the books...Oh look, it's 1.99! PERFECT.Only, I open the kindle version...and the font is TINY. Tiny, tiny, TINY. I go to enlarge it...and there's no options? I go to highlight something - I can't. Here I am, in my thick-lensed glasses, and I can't read this on my brand new kindle. Are you kidding me?! Why even have it available on Kindle if you aren't going to include all of the option? So not only is that a waste of space on my kindle, its also a waste of my money and time. I don't know how anyone can read this without getting major eye strain and a migraine.Consider fixing your format and maybe I'll write a better review.

The How to Train Your Dragon series is fantastic! Wonderful for encouraging young boys to read, but enjoyable for the whole family. Of course, the books are better than the (Americanized) movie, but the audiobooks may be the best version of all. It's performed (not narrated) by David Tennant, who is absolutely amazing. Always, but especially here, where he's created dozens (hundreds?) of characters that come alive in your imagination.Especially recommended for those who enjoy British lit like Harry Potter, Roald Dahl or Terry Pratchett, but really for anyone who likes stories and storytelling.

Just the best series for little ones. David Tennant is the absolute best narrator and makes all the characters so lively. He makes your imagination come alive with all of the nuances he gives each character. And the writing by Cressida Cowell is impecable as well. We listened to all the books 3 years ago, and now we are doing it again. This time my kid is reading along in the books as we listen. He needed the visual with the auditory to understand some aspects of phonics better. I plan on doing the same thing in 3 years for my other child, and I know I will be just as enthralled then as I am now.

This is actually a very good read. I was quite surprised because I have always thought of her as a ditz. I was in a B&B in Canada and was a little bored one evening after my workshop, so I picked it up to look at the photos. I began reading it and ended up buying it to finish it. She is an intelligent woman and honest in this book. A couple of things she does here (going into strange people's homes as an adult) I thought was a bit egotistical and entitled, especially because she didn't call herself on it. Other things she does, she actually admits behaving like a celebrity and I appreciated that she knew it was wrong. I found the postcards very unique and a creative way to write a book. After reading it, I went and watched a few more of her films that I was not aware of. The Peter Sellers film, she is actually more funnier than he is. So if you need something entertaining to read, pick it up. It is a good book.

Read this when it first came out in hardcover. It still resounds with me. Her outlook on life is always positive. When I grow up I want to be happy, is such a wonderful quote. She takes on her life and its challenges with a great attitude. Thats what makes this woman unique yet real. She touches your heart through out the book, yet her infectous smile and giggle come through in evey chapter. In the sadder ones, you can feel her pain. Shes candidly honest. I loved it!!! Wish she would write another.

Its Goldie"s voice in the recording. the book is really enjoyable. its not a hollywood tell-all, not in the least. Its her story from her perspective as a woman, a daughter, and a mother. She just happens to be a hollywood heavyweight, but that really is secondary in this book. it serves as merely a detail of this womans life. This one the most beautiful biographies ive ever read. i read the book but when i realized its actually her on the audio book, i had to get it. She is just pleasent to listen to.

completely unexpected story...not a story as much as a series of vinettes. NOT a tell-all Hollywood tale.Never would have guessed that Goldie iis such a spiritual, concerned person. A good read for anyone.

Fell in love with goldie back in laugh in days when i was in college. Grew into womanhood with this beautiful soul in my entertainment radar all these years. Now a grandma, still in love with goldie & now Kurt. Lol. Great read-great insight into this great human being who just happens to be Goldie Hawn!

I love biography's, Sally Field's is excellent. I have always like Goldie Hawn and was curious about her life so I started reading her book as well. Goldie glosses over her life and focuses more on life lessons. It's boring, not detailed, I couldn't get through it.

Goldie's personality is apparent but I was pleasantly surprised how thoughtful her insights were. This is not a "tell all", gossipy book. She has had such an interesting life that I was hoping for some more fun details. A lot of descriptive adjectives and adverbs fill the pages in setting the scenes, whether in India or on the California beaches, but sometimes it was too much for me and I wanted more details, less description.

I always associated joy and lightness with Goldie Hawn, but I didn't get much sense of that in this memoir. Not everyone is a riveting writer.She lectured unnecessarily in every chapter. I understand that she feels she has learned a lot and gained wisdom with her years, but it took away from the flow of the narrative. Plus, there was nothing exceptional about the wisdom.It did bother me that she didn't seem to understand that you can't just pull yourself up by your bootstraps if you are molested. You can't just forget and put a smile on your face. Sometimes you get PTSD. She was fortunate that in the one incident she experienced, she was able to scream upon understanding what he was going to do and was immediately surrounded by her protective family who came rushing to her aid and believed her without question. Sometimes people think that only what they experience is true and if your experience is different, you're somehow at fault. That alienated me.It was interesting to hear the stories behind the scenes of movies. She was very positive about people, which I liked.

For many years after my return from Vietnam, I searched for a way and a means to try and restore my peace and my sanity. Something that could help me make sense of what I had just experienced. I went down many paths, self destruction and denial being the longest running. I made attempts at finding answers through many means, none of them were right and I knew it in my heart. i struggled with depression, self-medication and a feeling that something needed to be right in my soul, i thought that i had lost a piece of myself. One day I entered a public library not knowing what I was really looking for, no real purpose in mind. As I walked the aisles my eyes locked on a book with concentric blue circles. I can only say that I was drawn to it, I knew instinctively there was something important about it. I opened it randomly and settled on a paragraph from a paper and began to read. Immediately and without a doubt I knew I was reading truth. Its hard to describe the feeling that went thru me, It was like slowly dying from thirst and suddenly being saved by a clear cool spring. I read no more than that first paragraph and immediately went to the counter and checked it out. When I arrived home, I opened it and began to read, what I found was so profound and so intense I realized there was no way I could ever complete this book in the normal 2 week check out time.. I then went to the contact information, called the foundation and ordered my own copy. I believed I needed to start at the beginning which I did and read every written word. I have fairly rapid reading skills yet I could not read more than a few paragraphs at a time without falling asleep totally exhausted by the effort. It took me one year to finish the book reading it nearly every day. Almost all of what I read seemed nearly incomprehensible to me at the time but I knew instinctively that it was truth. By the time I had finished it I realized I had read the most profound book of my life ... and yet I felt as if I had hardly absorbed it at best. I immediately went back to the beginning and began reading it all over again, the second time it took approximately 6 months to complete, I began to understand more and more as time and pages went by. That was many years ago now and I read a paper or a portion of one from the website every day. The reading of the Urantia Book is a life journey, to become a part of your everyday existence. I think of portions of it at all hours of the day, often times as I wake each morning. To say it changed my life would be an understatement. Some of you will find it to be the same.

This book took me over two years to read. The 1st thousand pages required a lot of concentration in order to understand the complexity of the content of God and the universe. I read many books in the meantime. I would read a Paper (chapter), or part of one, and have something else to turn to (The Nightingale, All the Light We Cannot See, La mano de Fatima, La Catedral del mar, Dime quien soy, The Physician, among others). All in all, the entire book was a fascinating learning experience, a journey of discovering so much that I had never imagined the possibility of existing. It has made everything that I did know about history and religion so much clearer, and it explained things that never made sense to me. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who has read it and I wish one of my friends or colleagues would so that I could discuss it with someone. It was the learning experience of a lifetime, and has profoundly changed me. I will always be grateful to the person who recommended it to me, one of my students who died last year at the age of 25, who I know is on his journey to perfect himself, even as God is perfect.

A journey that once begun, words begin to fail for descriptive purposes of just what this book really is, as it is so much more than just a book. It answers pretty much any and every question one could ever think of. If questions such as, who are we? how old is the world? why are we here? where are we going after this life? who were Adam and Eve really? did we evolve from animals? whats the purpose/meaning/value of life? ever crossed your mind then this book should be on your must read list. If you believe in Jesus and wanted to discover more about Him, His loving and merciful nature and wonderful plans for you, this book is definitely for you. Even if you don't but are spiritual and or seeking truth, you wont find a more enlightening manuscript anywhere. It supports no particular religion but shows us how to find and draw out the truth, beauty and goodness within them all and encourages each of us to develop a personal relationship (religion) with the indwelling spirit fragment of God living and loving within each and every one of us. It's nickname is the "Truth Book" and for very good reason. The tough part for many is the faith it takes to believe it really is a "Revelation" written by the Angels above us. I have read it and am wholeheartedly convinced it was. It either was or wasn't but if there is supposedly a book on earth written by angels wouldn't you want to read it for yourself and be the judge? Trust me there is no way a human being could write like this and you will feel that inside of you after reading just one page if not one paragraph?! Over one million words and not a single contradiction or inconsistency. It doesn't exclude -it includes, all of us, as we are all children of the same God-Father-Creator and we may call Him whatever we wish, He loves us all and has never revealed Himself by name only nature. If you are on a spiritual journey and wish to discover more of the true and loving nature of God, I encourage you with all my heart take the chance and the time and you will be forever grateful.....May God bless you in all your strivings!

From someone in their 20's, I can see how girls would easily be turned off by certain things written in this book. There is some great advice, and a lot of it is very important for teen girls to hear; however, much of the writing is too obviously spoken from an older generation. If you really want to reach through to teen girls, you need to relate to them better.SO much of this book sounds like things your Grandmother would tell you- and while she is probably right, teenage girls are not always that receptive to parents or grandparents. The author dramatically dates herself when she subjectively criticizes the current film industry as shallow. Telling a teen that their favorite movies lack substance and advising them to instead watch "Singing in the Rain," while wise, is a fast method of chasing them off and allowing them to dismiss you as being out-of-touch. Referring to selfies as "self-portraits" doesn't help, either. A relaxed, informal style of writing would be better received by the target audience I believe. I laughed at the use of the word "creepsters," which I have never heard any kid say. This amount of clichés would turn off a lot of teens before they even finished previewing the contents."The Smart Girl's Guide yada yada yada had me wishing for a book with a much younger, realistic, and more relateable voice- which is necessary to actually convince many girls to stay interested enough to finish reading the book . As much as we want to believe that teens are all wise beyond their years, we know that their frontal lobe is not fully developed, and wisdom is not always their strongest trait; therefore, teenagers are much more likely to take advice from a friend than a parental figure.No matter how many adults read and purchase the book, it is not effective unless it is read. I am curious to hear what the teenager we are giving it to thinks.

I got this book for my soon to be 13 year old daughter. She loves it. I love that she lives it! Some of the advice may rub some wrong, but quite frankly, I think much of the advice is a kind way of saying that you should not conform to this world.I love that the authors continually point girls to where their true focus should be: on God and his word, and they do it in a fun, engaging way.

Growing up, I read a lot of neat little books – both Christian and secular, both good and bad – advising how to dress, act, and survive the teenage years. That might have been ages ago, but I confess that genre can still pique my interest. So it’s no wonder that I picked up a copy of Smart Girl’s Guide to God, Guys, and the Galaxy: Save the Drama! and 100 Other Practical Tips for Teens (Shiloh Run Press, 2014) after stumbling across it online. Authored by Susie Shellenberger, editor of the now defunct BRIO and Sisterhood Magazine, and stand-up comedienne Kristin Weber, Smart Girl’s Guide promises helpful advice with a dash of humor.To be honest, I expected a lot more from Smart Girl’s Guide. While there are a few unexpected gems, like “Take an apologetics course,” much of the advice – and the reasoning behind it – is cliché: Respect your parents. Study your Bible. Dress modestly. Trust God rather than peers. In a huge market like young adult nonfiction, something unique is needed to make one book stand out from all the competitors, either in the topics covered or in how the advice is offered. Smart Girl’s Guide appears to have neither. It’s just another fish in the sea.That’s not to say that the authors didn’t put a lot of effort into it. It just doesn’t really show. The content is generally boring, and the jokes tend to fall flat. It would’ve been easily improved by organizing the hodgepodge of tips around particular themes and eliminating some of the vagueness and repetition. There’s also room for expansion. I would’ve also liked to see lists of suggested books and classic movies that aren’t limited to a few of the authors’ favorites. And some of the tips require more research to actually carry them out. That might not seem like a big deal, but guides like this should aim to be comprehensive, requiring little additional work so that the kids will actually complete the tasks.I also thought that the perspective offered was often too adult. Kids should be learning how to protect their personal information online and manage online account settings, not relying on a crutch like a junk email account to handle spam. They shouldn’t be signing up for online contests anyway considering the legal age requirements. And while window shopping at a mall might be a waste of time for the authors, it’s a convenient and relatively safe activity for teens. The authors’ alternative – hiking in the wilderness, with no mention of getting a chaperone – might sound like a great idea to many non-parents, but it’s probably one of the most unsafe things teen girls could do.Another part that needed work was the titled advice about dealing with the opposite sex. “Have guy ‘friends,’ not boyfriends” sounds like a brochure headline for a one-way trip to the “friend zone.” And trust me, don’t ever go there. It’s lonely. I’m not saying girls can’t have male friends, but they often want more than that. They want attention, love, and sex. Those are biological realities, and God’s responsible for them. We need to quit pretending that these desires don’t exist or that they are somehow abnormal or bad. Instead, show teens how to be more selective in whom they date. Promote group and chaperoned dates to avoid being put in compromising positions. And encourage more honest parent-teen talks about things like sexual temptation and pornography. Since dating is probably the main topic of interest to most teen girls, I think that the authors missed a huge opportunity to make a real impact on their readers’ lives.Perhaps my expectations were a little high, but nevertheless I was left disappointed. And that’s rather unfortunate because, of all the books in the series, Smart Girl’s Guide has the most potential. Teen girls eat up this kind of stuff, and their parents will often buy it for them. A book marketed to teen boys (The Guy's Guide to God, Girls, and the Phone in Your Pocket), their mothers (The Savvy Mom's Guide to Sons), or teen girls’ fathers (The Smart Dad's Guide to Daughters) are more likely to sit on the shelf.

I bought this for my niece who lives far from us and I wanted her to have these great truths and perspectives....but before I wrapped it my own teens girls saw it and started reading it on their own and liked it so I ordered more!!

I am very glad to have found this book for my research...it has a lot of scientific information and data and it will be a great addition to my library. It is well researched and well written.

Great book about a man who camped out in the african wilderness for many months to observe gorillas. This book gives detailed accounts of his sightings and observations. It delves into the foods they eat, their nest-building habits, behavior, and more. It's a little slow at the beginning, but it gets more into gorillas as you continue reading.

Very outdated and drawn out but educational

After reading Schaller's book I can't recommend it highly enough to others, either interested in natural science, gorillas, or just want a great read.

A splendid story from one of our premier wildlife conservationists and activists. Reveals the ordinary lives of extraordinary gorillas and people.

The book was awesome. Very descriptive, explained the landscape, the behavior of gorillas, but also the people involved. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Mr Schaller was a pioneer in the study of the mountain gorillas and this work recounts his studies undertaken in what was later known as Zaire in the early 1960 just prior to independence (and subsequent spiral into civil war and violence which has yet to see an end). His insights into gorilla behavior and his adventures into areas wholly unknown to West at the time are very entertaining. I especially enjoyed the very first chapter which provided a comprehensive overview of the history of the discovery of the gorilla by Westerners.

This is the fascinating story of the author's expedition to study Mountain Gorillas in 1959-60. Told as a detailed narrative, it is as much an adventure story as a scientific analysis.From the riveting first encounter with a family of gorillas through the identification of several distinct groups, their daily routine is revealed. The gentleness that Schaller found dispelled many long held myths about Gorilla behavior.Beyond the gorillas, this is also the complete story of a region, its people and other flora and fauna. The issues of preservation of these animals and their habitat are much the same as those faced today.This is the documentation of an important pioneering work that paved the way for Fossey and other researchers who would follow. Illustrated with photos and maps, it is a compelling read from cover to cover.
