Ostensibly, TFM is the story of the 40 year old Jacques as he returns to the village of his birth, as well as visits his surviving relatives in Algiers, and tries to gain a sense of his unknown father and his life. But Camus, in using this approach, also writes a brilliant coming-of-age novel that considers the poor in history and surely captures what Albert Camus himself experienced as he grew up in a working-poor family in Algiers.In TFM, Jacques Cormery is unable to learn much about his father, who has been dead for forty years. At the most, Jacques is able to place his father within the context of the stoic original Pied Noirs, who were often political refuges of the 1848 French Revolution. Ultimately, Jacques attributes his father's anonymity to his life in the working-poor. "There was a mystery about that man, a mystery he had wanted to penetrate. But after all there was only the mystery of poverty that creates beings without names and without a past, that sends them into the vast throng of the nameless dead who made the world while they themselves were destroyed forever."At the same time, the brilliant Jacques has total recall of his own impoverished boyhood, which he conveys in a narrative of wonderful vignettes and character sketches. Here, I open TFM at random to the chapter entitled "Lycée", where my marginalia includes such scene summations as: waking up early in a working class home; riding the trolley; peddlers in the arcade near the lycée; a schoolboy feud with a shopkeeper; and the fritter man. Anyway, you get the picture: All nuance in the life and character of Henri Cormery may be gone. But Jacques Cormery is able to recreate the world and personalities of his own impoverished boyhood. These will never disappear as long as there are readers for TFM.This is a terrific novel and quasi memoir and it's HIGHLY recommended to those who have read and enjoyed "The Stranger".

I just finished reading The First Man for the second time, to once again be with the mother Camus loved and immortalized unforgettably. This time, however, it was the grandmother who came alive in a new way, domineering, frightening, but now with an integrity I had not seen so clearly. They live!

The world had to wait so long for this autobiography by Camus to be published. It was well worth the wait, and the book contains all the warmth and humanity attributed to the man himself. Camus was tragically killed in a car accident, and one can only mourn the loss of the riches the book would have contained, had Camus lived to complete it. Of all his books, I found this to be the most profound and the most moving.

This book, considered autobiographical and based on Camus' coming of age in colonial Algeria, was originally found as an unfinished manuscript with Camus' body in the car wreck that killed him in 1960. Perhaps because it was never completed, we are left with mostly vivid impressions as seen through episodes rather than a built-up sequence of events. Despite poverty at home the boy's talent is spotted and allowed to thrive at the elite lycée. What is striking about this book is the tranquility and naturalness of the Algerian landscape, offsetting an increasingly tense situation. There is the reality of fighting, of battles between the FLN and the French colonial interests, between the natives and the pied noirs which was not sustainable. The literature gives a personal dimension, showing that the reflexive love of the land you grew up on persists whether you are an Arab denied French citizenship for a century of rule, or a French national who calls Algeria home.

I'm still working my way through this...Having read the Camus canon it took some mental adjustment to be open to what he writes here...I first read him when I was 17...now the numbers are reversed so I am different but I still value him and what he writes...very glad I got the book..

The first part of this book is a great take on what is it like to live life poor ... not the kind of poor we see in NA these days, where there is at least the possibility of someday improving yourself, but the stolid, resolute poor that know this is their lot in life, for all their life, and what life becomes of that.The second part is notes and small passages .. which seems interesting but is just too disjointed to follow and enjoy. It's a tragedy the way he died, and that he never finished this masterpiece.

Budiansky, a writer at U.S. News and World Report, may not provide as many ``insights into the true nature of the beast'' as he hopes, but he serves up fascinating historical, behavioral, and biological nuggets about our equine friends. Troubled that our understanding of Equus caballus is badly flawed, Budiansky (Nature's Keepers, 1995) endeavors to set the record straight, clearing the air of ``what millenniums of tradition, love, and wishful thinking have sometimes muddled,'' and telling the horses' story through the ``objective tools of science.'' He starts at the beginning of domestication, 6,000 years ago, with the Sredni Stog people. They, it is surmised, either clambered atop the horse or ate him; their bones are mixed together at archaeological digs in the Ukraine, marking the onset of a long, fruitful association. Horses and humans discovered what they had in common: an intuitive language of dominance and submission, an adaptation to grasslands, a social fabric built on subordination to authority and trust. Budiansky's portrait delves into mitochondrial DNA analysis, the mechanics of movement and eyesight and vocalization, but he's hesitant to guess at the ultimate meaning of this data. He is less edifying but far more entertaining when he occasionally hazards subjective rather than scientific information, as in his observation of the horse's ability to interpret subtle social cues shared with humans (dispelling notions of horses as mind readers) or when he simply throws out an idea he has concerning their fabled homing instinct. And he's incisive when describing the curious world of the stud book and the ambiguous effects of inbreeding. From the mechanics of their movements to herd dynamics, the evolution of their grazing habits to inter- and intra-herd behavior, this book is full of details of interest to horse-lovers.

I am enjoying reading this..helps to understand horses more , and how sensitive they are, and how most training methods are too harsh. Now I think, "would I do this to a dog, child?" Before I work with a horse, I would not chase/ whip a dog around in circles to teach it to sit, why a horse? And they are more perspective than most animals.

This is the most interesting, enlightening and rewarding book about horses that I have ever read. It is the only book anyone needs to fully appreciate this beautiful creature, how it has evolved, lives, thinks, communicates and relates with others. It gives the reader an insight into the nature of horses that can only come from someone who loves and respects the creature, scientific research, and the light it can shed on the facts, and the fads and fantasies that have accompanied horses for generations.

I was not disappointed with this book. Very professionally written about what makes horses do what they do. It is not based on opinions but on scientific facts and observations. After reading it, you know more about why a horse spooks, is claustrophobic, is herd bound, etc. The more you know, the more you understand how to deal with your horses because you understand better why they behave that way. I recommend this book for anyone serious about learning the nature of horses.

As a fan of black and white photography, I've read a couple of books that explain the "how" of this segment of shooting pictures. This one is terribly disappointing. It opens by telling readers to not take photos that are clichés, and as you go through and look at the photos in the book, by the author, you see many clichés. There are sections talking about shooting portraits, street photography, landscapes, etc, but all they do is show his photos and explain how he shot them; there is no broader explanation of shooting black and white, as opposed to color. The section on composition looks like it's cribbed from another book, with specious things like the golden ratio, and is really quite useless; at least it's not specific to black and white photos.The text is bland and boring - which could be in part because of the translation - and after reading about a quarter of the book, I skimmed the rest, looking at the photos, and reading some of the descriptions. This is overall pretty useless for those who want to know more about shooting black and white pictures.

This is a welcome volume for B&W photogs and a useful read for color photographers from another fine German photographer/author. This is Hoffmann's first instructional book to be published in English, although he has had numerous articles on image design/composition published in the magazine "Leica Fotographie International", or LFI, which, by the way, is not published by Leica-Camera GMBH.Hoffmann emphasizes the possibilities in tonal manipulation in digital and analogue photographing. The point of his presentation is always to show how manipulating the tones and, therefore, contrast, contributes to the design of the image with respect to the photographer's intentions. He spends a significant amount of space on showing how to elicit mood in various kinds of photographs (content).His chapters start with, what I find to be, rather interesting summaries of the chapter topic's history, significant practitioners, and current directions. Then he examines several of his own images in detail. His commentary on an image concentrates on the visual structure and on the darkroom and/or digital manipulations necessary to realize his intentions. The only other book that comes to mind for nearly such excellence in pictorial descriptions or captions is the first edition of Bill Smith's "Designing a Photograph," which sets the standard for applying the Gestalt visual psychological approach to analyzing image structure.Rather differently from the other two top volumes on image structure currently in print, Michael Freeman's "The Photographer's Eye," and Harald Mante's "The Photograph," Hoffmann spends significant time looking at the various genres of photographic subject matter and then covers composing/design from the point of view of visual tensions and abstract structure. There is overlap with both of the other volumes, but also depth and emphasis that is his own. Color is not part of the subject in this book, but color photographers will benefit from Hoffmann's insights into tonality, contrast, and structure in images.This book, IMHO, sort of completes the circle of really good books on photographic composition/design at the intermediate level. With this book, the years 2007 and 2008 have been the best in a few decades for the publication of outstanding books on design/composition, and it is interesting to this reviewer that the three best are by an English and two German photographer/authors . It just does not seem that US practioners are taught the nuts and bolts of visual design to any degree of depth and ability to articulate their thoughts about image structure. The ability of even world class US photographers to discuss the reasons that their images work in structural terms is relatively rare.I like this book enough to make a triumvirate of this one, Freeman's book, and Mante's book for readers interested in sophisticated, analytical approaches to visual design and image structure. The only thing I would wish for is that more of his photos be accompanied by those delightful little thumbnails with his structural line diagrams. The more of these there are in a book, the more an interested reader packs away in one's mental image databank for later resurrection and use.Some asides before I finish. Hoffmann gets more visual mileage from aircraft vapor trails than anyone else I know of. Most of us regard these as intrusions into the tranquility of our landscape images. But, in the venerable tradition of divorcing content from an image's abstract structure, and the role of structure being to support the content, Hoffmann integrates these features into his images so forcefully that to remove them would ruin the image. Bravo; Mante would be proud.Too, the basic structural architecure of many of his images rests upon the grid formed from the golden ratio approximations of breaking the height and width into 5/8th and 3/8th divisions. One advantage of this choice versus the preference of US photographers for the Thirds Rule is that the Thirds method breaks the space into nine identical rectangles - a recipe well on the way to boring space management. Yet, as shows Charles Bouleau in his seminal book, "The Painter's Secret Geometry," even relatively simple visual architectures in the hands of someone with excellent training and inspired talent yield captivating, dynamic images, while the plodders among us achieve less subtle and interesting results.I hope it will not be so long before Hoffmann gives us a volume on design in color photography.19 November 2008. I just read this book again. It is more satisfying, informative, and a pleasure to read than I realized the first time through. The second section covers thirteen genres or concepts, each one starting with a delightful essay that I began to look forward to in succeeding chapters. Beginning with a chapter on dealing with cliches and ending with a chapter on eliciting mystical elements from a subject and a chapter on panoramics, he deals with the major philosophical aspects relating to photography in each genre, how such issues have changed through the history of photography, sometimes the relationships to other visual arts, and some reference to major past and current practitioners.The third section presents fourteen aspects of composing images, from "what is composition" to movement in the image. The prefatory remarks are much more brief than in the genres/concepts section, but are insightful. His approach to composing emphasizes the principles of design and techniques of visualization and thinking to achieve the principles, and less concentration on the elements that one gets from Mante and Freeman.In all four sections of the book, when he discusses a photograph, he does it better, more thoroughly from a structural point of view, and at a higher level than most any other writing I have seen.I now feel that this book ranks right up there with Freeman and Mante as coequal in quality, depth, and level of presentation. These are the three strongest books on the composition/design subject in years. If you are interested in analytical, thinking, focussed approaches to making, understanding, and appreciating images, I cannot recommend too strongly owning and reading several times the three books by Freeman, Mante, and Hoffmann.

The first covers some technical issues such as file types (RAW, TIFF, JPEG), the polarizing filter, and the gradient filter. The second is an overview of genres. The core of the book is Section Three, Rules of Composition. Section Four wraps up with some Photoshop techniques. Hoffman's own photos - both analog and digital - demonstrate the concepts presented in the text.The author is clearly knowledgeable about photography, but not always effective at imparting that knowledge. For example, he frequently refers to "image tension" without ever explaining what he means by this.

Very disappointed in the book. It is only helpful if you are using PS3. Since PS6 was the first version of Photoshop I used and I currently use CC, it is virtually useless.I purchased it because of a recommendation from Rocky Nook. I won't make that mistake again

Insights on "Meaning" in photography, going beyond snapping shots, beyond the technical, beyond classification ["There's a shot of the Grand Canyon"] to sensing and feeling and expressing oneself, approaching in some cases a meditative state. All this is good, though I got a lot more from Bruce Barnbaum's earlier work "The Art of Photography."

I have just started reading this book and I am finding it to be superb. It is technically up to date but reaches back to the film world where black and white photos were the only game available. He not only covers techniques but also artistic insights, compositions, and creating worthwhile photographs while avoiding cliched photos. Exactly what I was looking for, a book for photographers with practical techniques and valuable insights. Highly recommended.

I understand why some people are upset with the book. "Digital Workflow" should not have been in the title since the author does not go deep into the post-processing. However, the book itself is very well organized, has some valuable tips for beginners and most importantly it's an easy and pleasent read.

Always good to read another view point on creating photographic images. Well printed book that motivates any photographer to get back to shooting for fun, not just money.

147 pages, about 100 of these are photos with captions. The photos and the book itself are very high quality. The author & photographer are native Newfoundlanders, who had been away from "home" for many years, and then returned. Very much a people-centered book, don't expect photos of puffins and moose. But they strive to capture the real Newfoundlander, sometimes at leisure but mostly at work. Most photos are outdoors, so the feel of the land and sea are a big part of this. I paid $5 for this (Amazon) so if you can get this for anything near that it's well worth it. Recommended.

I started with the kindle version and was using it so much that I bought the print. While the content is the same, the book is beautiful! Since the author is using images to memorize verb tenses (I finally can use Ser and Estar correctly) it is nice to see the artwork on paper. I highly recommend either version of the book to any Spanish language learner, even if you think that you know a lot of vocabulary. Moser teaches grammar and sentence structure in a fun way that will really stick with you. You still have to do the "work" of language learning, but you will be able to retain it better.

(This is an updated version of a review I wrote in early March on Goodreads.)I read this book in conjunction with the coaching course. So far, nothing's helped me learn Spanish better. I have tried for years before this. Thank you, Timothy. There are some things I never understood well before that he explains clearly. (Like por vs. para and that the difference between ser and estar is NOT due to "permanent" vs. "temporary." Or when you are supposed to use the subjunctive tenses, which are heavily emphasized.) I also like that he emphasizes common grammar patterns and the most frequently-used words first so you can just plug in other less-frequently-used verbs, nouns, and adjectives into sentence patterns later. Then common idioms that use words and patterns you just learned get added into the mix, too.Plus, as Timothy notes, he is not only teaching you Spanish--he is also teaching you memory techniques, especially memory palaces. I've been interested in memory palaces for at least two years. I've signed up for courses to learn how to build them for myself, but I never got far in them--I think I was just lazy coming up with my own memory palaces for things I wanted to memorize (and perhaps with not enough motivation or structure).Case in point: I recently listened to a podcast episode of "Becoming Superhuman" in which the host, Jonathan Levi, talks to Timothy about Levi's own accelerated learning course and trying to teach students memory palace techniques. In fact, this is one of the courses I tried and didn't go far in. :) But Levi likes that Timothy builds a (cute! and ingenious) memory palace *for you* in this book and matching Spanish course to learn something specific--that is, the Spanish the language. I couldn't agree more.That's why this Accelerated Spanish book, and its course, were perfect for me. (Then the memory palace gets reinforced with targeted homework and practice sessions. with your coach, a native speaker.) Now I can fully appreciate the power of memory palaces and have a much better idea of how to build them for myself. And maybe I'll even be encouraged to try Levi's course again.My only gripe with the book is most of the characters are male. I'm sure this wasn't a conscious thing on Timothy's part; it seems to be the default thing to do in most media. But perhaps in a later revision, mix up the character genders a bit? It's such a small gripe that I'm still keeping my review 5 stars because everything else is revolutionary to me. Also, it is nice and fun that the characters are all sorts of different creatures.My coach told me that volume 2 is in the works. I'm excited for it. While there are materials online for the rest of the course (volume 1 covers half of the structured lessons), I've been missing the detailed and carefully craft story and structure of the book format.Muchas gracias otra vez, Timothy. I have been working with Timothy Moser's online Spanish learning materials. Having studied Spanish over the years, the Accelerated Spanish approach is amazingly different. It starts with the most used words and builds on that foundation. After a couple of lessons you will know about 25% of the language. But that is only the beginning. As you explore Joel's world, you will build visual memories of the necessary words and grammar to accelerate your learning.The online course uses many of the same visuals but the book is so much better. It combines the materials spread over multiple links online in one place. The pictures are more professional and lodge themselves more firmly in your memory.If you have any interest in learning Spanish, try this approach. You will enjoy it.

I had started learning Spanish before I found this system. It was a bit painful to force myself to stop studying my other resources and go back to the very basic fundamentals, but once I did, I found my comprehension increased virtually overnight. This method is a lottery ticket in understanding for those who follow it the way it was meant to be followed.

I worked through this book in four weeks, and I think it offers a unique and powerful way to learn Spanish. The authordevelops a fictitious story around each new vocabulary word to help you learn and remember the words. This method of learning is called mnemonics (see Wikipedia). The sillier the story the easier it is to remember. You don't have to make up your own mnemonics for every word, as the author does this for you. Remembering the story helps you remember the vocabulary. Additionally, the author teaches the most commonly used Spanish words first, including common nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, etc. Instead of learning just nouns (like some courses teach), in this book you learn words to make complete sentences. After finishing this book I was able to write and speak simple complete sentences with correct grammar. I’m not saying that learning a new language is trivial, especially if you have an older brain like mine, but I believe this book offers a great way to begin learning Spanish.

I've been doing Duolingo and using other sources to learn Spanish. What is different about this learning style is that you learn using mind palaces to place types of words in scenes. There's a website with videos, quizzes, and other tools to use with the book to help you learn. Though I've learned a lot from the other Spanish sites and books, the first two chapters of this have helped me more in one month than those have in almost a year. You'll have to put in extra time to think about the lessons and write out the practice sentence work, but even though some scenes are silly, they can really work to help you understand the use of the word and how to link things into sentences you'd hear every day.
