In this academic study, Holden, a British sociologist, attempts to understand why the strict and austere Watch Tower Society continues to enjoy rapid growth. This is neither a primer on the danger of "cults" nor an endorsement of the Witnesses' distinctive beliefs, but a balanced ethnography that draws upon interviews with both adherents and ex-members to help readers understand what it is like to be part of the Society. Holden's main thesis that the Watch Tower is engaged in careful and ongoing negotiations with the secular culture that surrounds it is a nuanced one, especially compared to previous studies that have depicted the movement as little more than an extremist rejection of modernity. The study bears the marks of the dissertation that it once was: it overexplains how data were collected and analyzed, surveys the historiography of the topic (which, as Holden points out, is all but nonexistent in the case of the Witnesses) and relies heavily on a few theorists (in this case, Clifford Geertz and Mary Douglas). Only one criticism: very very repetitive! It would have made a far better journal article than a book. However, the author offers theoretical explanation of converts, how such conservative movement stands to flourish in modern day, and paradoxical relationship between JW and modernity. Highly recommended students of sociology of religion or religious studies.

If you or someone you know are studying with Jehovah's Witnesses you owe it to yourself to read this. There are very few objective third person analyses of the religion available, this is one of them. Holden, neither a member that sees things through rosy colored glasses of faith, nor a former member embittered by disappointment or a bad experience, provides an analysis that is as up to date, accurate and unbiased as you will find.

Excellent resource to unmask the satanic claims of the Jehovah's Witnesses Governing Body. If you are a Christian read this book to add to your arsenal of weapons against this evil cult.

British sociologist Andrew Holden wrote in the Preface to this 2002 book, "And so to the objectives of this book. I write for an academic community, or indeed for anyone with a sociological interest in religious movements... In the pages that follow, I offer a glimpse of the modern world through the eyes of a group of religious devotees... The book is ethnographic and, as such, it is concerned with the Witnesses' version of reality... the book is not about comparative religion but about the lives of a group of people who claim to be IN but not OF the world."Here are some quotations from the book:"(Charles Taze Russell) also sold what he called 'miracle wheat' to credulous farmers at $60 a bushel. The fraud was eventually stopped by the federal authorities, who made him refund the money." (Pg. 18)"If there was one feature of the Watch Tower community that occupied my thoughts in the initial stages of my fieldwork, it would have been the absence of mysticism." (Pg. 58)"...someone claiming to have had an experience of a transcedental nature would be most unlikely to find solace in a Kingdom Hall. At no point in meetings is time made available for individual prayer... Although short prayers are recited, these last no more than two or three minutes and serve mainly to open and close meetings." (Pg. 64)"Several members told me that they preferred to partake in those aspects of Witness life such as Bible study and attending large meetings rather than ministry work because of the rejection from large numbers of uninterested sceptics." (Pg. 75)"Young Witnesses who intend to undergo baptism rarely progress to college or university. This can be a source of regret in subsequent years among those who are reared in the organization but who later defect." (Pg. 135)"Speaking to a huge audience of Witnesses in 1976, (Frederick) Franz attempted to explain why the (1975) prophecy had failed. I was raised Baptist; however as an adult, I still had several unanswered questions or certain things that did not seem practical. Over the past five years, I have been in search for the “truth” about life. I have studied with Catholics, IHOPers, Muslims and every class of Christianity. For the past 10 months, I’ve been studying with Jehovah Witnesses, so I have a little insight on the books topic. Holden did a good job pointing out the general structure and routines of the Society. The Society has created the perfect organization, with imperfect people and Holden research revealed that truth. The book is well organized and structured like a textbook. It starts with why the Witness believes “the end is near” and ends with Holdens conclusion of his experience in learning about the Society. He even has a glossary in the back to help you better understand the Jehovah Witnesses terminology. Holden also help people to understand that Witness are good people. I grew up running, hiding from them or pretending that we were not home, and after reading the book, you may not necessarily want to convert, but you may be more likely to open the door or at least be a little nicer when you tell them you’re not interested.Andrew Holden, a British Sociologist has taught various level of sociology throughout his career. He attended several meetings and interviewed people who had been in the organization. Holden tries to stay neutral throughout the book, but in my opinion, he fails to do so. He seemed a little ethnocentricit. For example throughout the entire book Holden insinuated that the organization was cult like. It’s true that Witness are “in” the world, but not “of” the world. This simply means that they live in the same communities, work the same jobs and go to the same schools as everyone else, they just don’t participate in ungodly activities.( same as other religions.) At the end of the book I realized, that everyone’s perception of things is different. Holden attended several meetings, and the things that he took for the people and the meetings were totally different from me. Over all I liked the book; for what it was, it was a pretty easy read. If you’re looking for general information about the operations of Jehovah’s Witnesses or your studying sociology, then this is the perfect book for you. However, if you are in search for the truth and want a sincere understanding about the religion, then its best to attend your local Kingdom Hall form your own opinion.

This book was pretty useful for my trip to San Diego. It had some interested information about the area and laid out information about the different districts. Honestly I wish they had a version for just San Diego because I feel like they could have covered even more, but all in all a solid purchase.

Have travelled frequently to Europe with many LP guides as a reliable and recommended companion. I am 43 years an Angelino and in comparison to European guide hooks highly disappointing to. I guess this book is a maybe ok guide for the first time foreign traveller. Where are the restaurants? Hotels? Beach bars?

This is smaller in size than older editions, but it is as informative as the Lonely Planets of Old. Easier to carry around with you. We are yet to travel to LA to try this edition out. To my way of touring and thinking this is an interesting Lonely Planet guide. I have purchased several others LP guides and some are more interesting to me than others. This one I have read cover to cover, my children(young Teens) have read and enjoyed this as well. Yes I am happy I have purchased this book. I always use these books inconjuction with the net and current local newspapers.

Lonely Planet is usually one of the best travel guides one can find, but the LA edition proved uninspired for me during a Nov 2012 week in LA. It did not help me decide what to visit or how to get there, and LA County is hard to navigate. The AAA tour book was far better and easier to carry if the hotel section is torn out.

I guess it's my fault for buying not just what I needed but the next best thing..I needed a city guide for the city of Los Angeles but there was not such book available from Lonely PlanetI always choose lonely planet because 9 out of 10 times provides me with the information I need and right on!Maybe it's okay for travellers taking a tour around the coast of southern California but definitely not so much for an in-depth knowledge of LAI was very disappointed to find there was no pull-out map, very little information for public transportation, and incomplete page maps (which by the way, I believe should never be split into two pages)

Excellent resource for visiting Southern California. We have not been on the trip yet but this guide gives us a great lay of the land and plenty of highlights to take in.

It is a very superficial guide, a lot of pages but fair description of the landmarks. Poor section of restaurants and the overall organization of the guide is confusing.Disappointed with lonely planet

The story about how the author has been managing his health is very inspiring and resonates with me as I care about nutrition and overall health.I loved how the book has positive and impactful quotes that make the point author is trying to make very clear. The book has made me question why I had not thought of leaving a legacy until now or atleast not very clearly. Overall, loved the book and would recommend it to anyone looking for motivation to get going.

This book is a quick and easy read. It was very insightful and even more encouraging! I myself do not suffer from Crohn’s, but I do have type 2 diabetes. I have had many on and off again relationships with plans of conquering and overcoming this. The Author is very transparent from the jump and his vulnerability helps me as the reader relate and plan. Make me feel inspired and encouraged.

I read Conquest in one sitting. Chapter 17 ( Leaving a Lasting Legacy) put all the preceding chapters in perspective for me. When unmotivated I can be very motivated when someone else will benefit from my actions. Thinking of what I want my legacy to be has been life-changing. Such a quick and easy read delivering a huge impact on ones life. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a higher meaning to life.

This is the book I wish existed when I started beekeeping in 2008. Loaded with photos and step-by-step instructions, it's one of the few books that will help you survive your first year, especially if you don't have a mentor. As the co-chair of the Albuquerque beekeepers group (400 strong) for the past 3 years, here's why I think beginner beeks will be especially well-supported by the approach in this book.PROS:- STEP-BY-STEP instructions are included for a variety of beginner tasks like installing a package, lighting a smoker, and conducting your first hive check. Seasoned beekeepers often forget how scary these first steps can be.- PHOTOS, PHOTOS, PHOTOS! Everything from eggs and larvae to wax festooning to varroa mites to Nasonov fanning gets a gorgeous photo. I can't emphasize enough the importance of visual learning when it comes to beekeeping.- A PERSONAL STORYLINE. This book follows the author's experience keeping backyard bees with her family. The good the bad and the ugly details are all included, making for a very forgiving and human narrative.- INTERVIEWS WITH LOCAL BEEKS. Backyard beekeepers from San Francisco to Austin to Chicago are highlighted throughout the book. (I'm on page 47.) The sheer variety of beekeepers presented makes a new beek feel comfortable developing their own unique approach.- A NATURAL APPROACH. Most books I used in my first year were very chemical-centric and solely devoted to Langstroth hives. This book primarily covers Langstroth hives but also discusses top bar hives and pays more than just lip-service to a chemical-free approach.CONS:- Once you have a full year of beekeeping under your belt, you'll want to move on to more substantial reference books like "The Beekeeper's Handbook" or "The Practical Beekeeper."

If you are new to beekeeping, read this book first! Some of the other books are a bit technical and can be confusing. This will give you a good base for starting out. I am a new beekeeper this year and this book got me excited to read more. My husband who hasn't finished a book in years actually read this book in two days. A great find and great information included. I know it will be part of our beekeeping experience for years to come.

Love this book, pictures, little stories, makes it fun to learn beekeeping. This is my first year of beekeeping, my husband has done it years ago so he's giving me some help, but this book will take you through everything you need to know, however, sometimes I need to go to the web to get more detail. Alethea is sensible of this and does a super job of taking you by the hand through all the steps necessary for you to understand what it is she is writing about.Additionally the illustrations are first rate,some of the best photographs and depictions I have ever seen in one Beekeeping book. Hello,Let me pre-face my review by saying I don't normally write reviews, but, here goes.I had to on this one, because, this book has been wonderfully enjoyed by me and my two kids for many reasons.It is a wonderfully written, informative how to book that takes you through something as daunting to myself as bee-keeping and it has opened up a whole new world of fun possibilities for me and my two kids! Seriously!I bought the book on a whim, for many reasons, one, I like collecting books on crafting, do-it-your self projects, you name it, and.... I always have this goal of farm to table adventures, and bee-keeping is for me the top.... a secret wish that I never thought I'd actually be able to do.Then arrives this book!Firstly, it is really well-written. Not one of those how to books you just thumb through and mark pages...it has great stories about people doing small hives and showing you how you can too! I love that, it is very personal, and you instantly feel part of a fun community. It is easy to understand, and keeps you engaged with facts and everything you need to know-isms without being pretentious, dull, or repetitive. My daughter did a science project on honey bees and how important they are to our eco-system, and she was excited that that information was in there, too, a long with so much more we didn't know. We read the whole book together in just a couple of days, and have started our own plan! We are REALLY EXCITED!!There are a lot of really great photos, and the photos are just beautiful, it is such a picturesque book, and I can't say enough of how the book is just really, really cute, and pretty, I love all the artwork and the layout of the pages, and the way the sections and chapters are organized, it is wonderful to remember it all, it flows really nicely.... It was really fun reading with my kids, and we are excited about starting our own hive this spring, it's really fun to think of all that is possible and involved with bee-keeping, who knew? You have to get this book and find out!!! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in something to read about with their kids, or who loves crafts, hobbys, gardening, and, of course bees!I will definitely be looking for more books from this author!

My husband and I are both new to keeping honeybees, so this book was perfect for us "absolute beginners." It was an easy read (not text bookish), with plenty of photos and diagrams, and seemed to cover all of the basic steps for our first year with honeybees. Of the four books I bought on beekeeping, this is my favorite! I'm sure an experienced beekeeper would want something more involved and advanced, but that's not who it was written for...

A number of books like this are easy reads due to a lack of substance. If you're a seasoned reader of this sort of thing, you may find yourself saying, "Duh, who doesn't know this!" I, however, haven't read much in this genre, so I found it fairly useful. It reads quickly, interspersed with relevant, inspiring quotes. The end of each section of essays has "key takeaways," which is nice if you're only reading a few minutes at a time here and there. All of the authors come from respectable fields, so the content is relevant. Lastly, the design is attractive with it's bold red and black title and quote pages--it just looks cool, which is something not often said about the interior pages of a book. I'd recommend it, and, if I lost it, would probably buy it again.

I am picky about recommending books. This one is one I could recommend to anyone. Its is very insightful and useful. Its a quick read and is good for referencing when you need a pick-me-up when your routine drives you nuts. I highlighted a lot of this book. It also has wonderful quotes. The size of the book makes it easy to carry around anywhere. The font is a good size too. It is a quick read. But pace yourself because it has a lot of good information, that you need to absorb. This could even be a good book as a gift to someone. This book is a keeper in my book collection. I will probably keep this near my desk to glance at.

I don’t think I’ve ever said this about a time-management or organizational or artists’ business book: This is a must-read book for creative entrepreneurs.The pros: The information is delivered in short, easy-to-grasp concepts approached from different creative people’s points of view. It’s like a best-minds approach rather than one person’s opinion.Each section has a key-takeaways page which revisits what you just read. I found it quite helpful in making the points stick in my brain.Speaking of the brain, I like the way the book addresses the science of the brain (in layman terms, no technobabble). It’s reassuring when science backs up a creative person’s work habits.Also, it’s a beautiful book! The black, red, and white pages, and the black and white fonts, and the different sized fonts, and the raised and impressed text on the cover (and the little fold out flaps) . . . it’s so visually and texturally appealing.The cons: Umm, can’t think of anything. I wished for more . . . I suppose that’s like a con.Overall, a five-star, must-read, beautiful book!

There is nothing earth shatteringly new in Manage Your Day-to-Day: Build Your Routine, Find Your Focus, and Sharpen Your Creative Mind but it is a great read. A collection of short essays from twenty leading creative minds, it will remind you of all the things you've read over the years about good creative practice and it will give you the reasons behind why you should make the changes you know you need to make. And it will give you some insights into why some of your current behavioural practises leave you feeling the way you do. I read it as part of a comprehensive overhaul of all aspects of my life. I took notes, I highlighted, I reread and I started making the changes. And bit by bit I'm beginning to feel like I'm rediscovering what I experienced in my week away.For me it's not about finding a way to "get the work done", it's about finding the space to revel in doing what I love. When that happens, the work gets done and done well.If you want to live a different way AND you are in a headspace where you're already committed to making the changes needed, then buy this book. It will inspire and give you some great food for thought to help you on your way. If you're not, don't bother. It's not a magic wand and it won't make a shred of difference. But I urge you to bother, to care, to take the leap, because it really, really is worth it.

I did glean some interesting ideas from this writing. The most interesting insight for me is that if those noted in this book can do it, then I can do it. The reading was somewhat of a rollercoaster, interesting in some spaces and dreadfully boring in some others. Overall the practical of building a routine was hidden in the pontificating of abstract and disconnected thought in many instances. The book is excellent in providing resources for additional investigation of the passages that do interest the individual.

"Manage Your Day-To-Day" was the first book I read and reviewed for my blog (Mad Man Thoughts)—and I was not disappointed. Anyone who knows me or follows my blog knows that I'm an unorganized person whose mind is constantly drowned in abstract thought and incomplete reflection. I felt like this book was written specifically for me. Behance—the company behind this book and the 99U program—interviewed a plethora of intelligent, witty, creative people and gathered their insights and strategies for building a routine, finding focus, managing new technology, pushing through creative blocks, and taking your skills and talents to the next level. I highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles to get organized, focus on the task at hand, and/or finish creative projects. This book flows well and is very easy to read (it's also visually appealing, even on a Kindle Paperwhite E-reader - Black, 6" High-Resolution Display (300 ppi) with Built-in Light, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers). The only downside of this book is that it does not go into great depth on any of the tactics or strategies mentioned. However, this seems to be purposeful as it allows you to ruminate on what was said.Overall, I loved it! Next, I'm reading the other book in the series: Maximize Your Potential: Grow Your Expertise, Take Bold Risks & Build an Incredible Career (The 99U Book Series 2)

This book is a lot of blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Nothing new; collection of cliched how-to articles. It’s a waste of money.
