Review

When I think about my friend James Goll, I think of a man without compromise, a man without guile. He reminds me of the prophet Daniel in the Scriptures because he is single in focus and a man of integrity. His life, in good times and in bad, seems to be a prophetic parable of God's limitless grace working in the life of His servant. This servant of the Lord is also one of the finest students of the Word I have ever met. His pursuit of all that is true seems to attract insights and revelation in a measure that is not normal for most of us. James Goll's passion is to make it practical, and then give it all away. I believe the book The Discerner is a gift from this prophet to the church. And much like his book The Seer, it will mark the church for decades to come. Read, enjoy, and be inspired, equipped, and empowered for such a time as this. --Bill Johnson Bethel Church, Redding, CA Author, When Heaven Invades Earth and God is Good As I travel the nation teaching spiritual warfare principles, one truth becomes painfully clear: the body of Christ, at large, lacks discernment. The reality is that many believers have simply not been activated or trained to discern spirits. Yet discernment is a vital gift in this hour as false prophets, false teachers, and even false christs are rising around the world with smooth sayings, rhymes, and riddles. Discerning of spirits is one of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit Paul lists in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11. It is the Holy Spirit-inspired ability to distinguish between the operations of the Holy Spirit, a demon spirit, and the human spirit. Discerning of spirits is especially helpful in prophecy, where we need to test the spirits to see if they are of God (1 John 4:1). It's also vital in spiritual warfare so that we accurately determine what we're battling instead of just beating the air through guessing games (1 Corinthians 9:26). James Goll's latest book, The Discerner, equips the body in discernment. Given the goings-on in the world and in the church, this book is right on time. Readers will understand, with clarity, how to press into the gift of discernment in its many manifestations, as well as cultivate biblical discernment to test the spirits. I thank God that James wrote this practical book. It is truly for such a time as this.--Jennifer LeClaire Senior Editor, Charisma and SpiritLed Woman Senior Leader, Awakening House of Prayer, Fort Lauderdale, FLI just finished reading James Goll's new book, The Discerner, and--wow! Let me say it this way: there are many books about hearing God's voice, but this goes way deeper, gifting you from the riches of James's life experience and prophetic ministry. It gives you a road map for navigating how to manifest the revelation you receive, and letting God change your very nature in the process. James is an encyclopedia of revelation and supernatural materials, and this book is like a capstone of all his previous wonderful works on revelatory gifting. I highly recommend it, and I immensely enjoyed it!--Shawn Bolz www.bolzministries.com It would be difficult to imagine a time in which discernment was more important than now. James Goll has been an observer of, participant in, or leader of almost every important wave of the Holy Spirit in ministry for forty years and is perfectly suited to teach the church how to navigate the various competing moral, spiritual, and political paradigms in this modern world. His new book, The Discerner, is full of rich insight and allows us to benefit from all that experience as he has watched and interacted with leaders, churches, denominations, and movements. As you meditate on this book, you will gain a greater understanding of the forces that affect your life and how to intelligently maintain your walk with God. He has skillfully taught and mentored on various aspects of prophetic revelation over the years, and now he introduces a very important component: The Discerner. There is very little written about this subject, and yet it is vital for us to understand. Many readers will find themselves defined as "discerners" when they read this book. As always, Dr. James Goll has penned a remarkable work that will continue to teach and train others for generations to come. Well done!--Patricia King Founder, Patricia King Ministries www.patriciaking.com James is such an immense treasure trove of wisdom and revelation on everything to do with spiritual seeing and discerning. James Goll has written a book that contains lessons about communicating with GOD that every Christian ought to know and constantly practice. ALL of us have some gifts of discernment, no one has all gifts of discernment. Goll clearly differentiates the types of gifts, how to recognize them, how to test them as 'truths' according to Scripture, how to determine whether your sensing is from the Holy Spirit or from the 'other' source, and very practical tips on to use the 'information' for the benefit of the Kingdom.I HIGHLY recommend reading this book...

I really enjoy all the books that I have read by James W. Goll. There were somethings that I already knew in this book but so much more that I didn't know...The writer makes it easy to understand how to discern what is going on in your life, how to discern what is of God, what's of you and what is of your enemy...excellent book and I encourage those who want the gift of discernment to read this book...He not only shows you how to accept this gift but also how to use it.

This book is excellent—easy to understand, and filled with practical ways to become more mature in the gift of discerning. James Goll inspires his readers to grow in this gifting, while always staying humble and glorifying God.

I was asked to teach a class on prophecy, so I bought several books to help with my studies. As I read, I realized that discernment was also a very important topic, so I bought some books on discernment. This was a well written book that provided other perspectives to assist me with teaching. The author knows the subject and did a fine job of imparting the knowledge and experiences of his life path.

His insights and suggested approaches are excellent. I have been a lay minister for nearly 60 years and wish I had read this in my early years. So, why only three stars? Too much "I", "my", etc. that takes away from his core message. It is obvious he has been a wonderful minister but let his book bear that testimony, he doesn't need to. If this does not bother you please get the book, you will gain great insight.

This book provides depth for the hungry believer. I love the personal examples from the authors life and the activation prayers at the end of each chapter. Practical and biblical!

James Goll is a favorite ,I love to listen an d to read his books. This book encouraged me to go deeper in my gift and taught areas of discernment, i had not put with it and convicting. If the chart good. Thank you James for teaching on this subject

This book is amazing! I really enjoy James' writing style. He is simple enough that anyone can comprehend, yet engages me even though I've been a believer for some time. He gives Spirit-led wisdom and also encourages application at the end of the chapters. This book as well as The Supernatural Life by Cindy Jacobs, The Worship Warrior by Chuck Pierce and Lifestyle of a Watchman by James Goll are some of my top favorite books.

Amazon.com Review

The Battle of Iwo Jima, fought in the winter of 1945 on a rocky island south of Japan, brought a ferocious slice of hell to earth: in a month's time, more than 22,000 Japanese soldiers would die defending a patch of ground a third the size of Manhattan, while nearly 26,000 Americans fell taking it from them. The battle was a turning point in the war in the Pacific, and it produced one of World War II's enduring images: a photograph of six soldiers raising an American flag on the flank of Mount Suribachi, the island's commanding high point. One of those young Americans was John Bradley, a Navy corpsman who a few days before had braved enemy mortar and machine-gun fire to administer first aid to a wounded Marine and then drag him to safety. For this act of heroism Bradley would receive the Navy Cross, an award second only to the Medal of Honor. Bradley, who died in 1994, never mentioned his feat to his family. Only after his death did Bradley's son James begin to piece together the facts of his father's heroism, which was but one of countless acts of sacrifice made by the young men who fought at Iwo Jima. Flags of Our Fathers recounts the sometimes tragic life stories of the six men who raised the flag that February day--one an Arizona Indian who would die following an alcohol-soaked brawl, another a Kentucky hillbilly, still another a Pennsylvania steel-mill worker--and who became reluctant heroes in the bargain. A strongly felt and well-written entry in a spate of recent books on World War II, Flags gives a you-are-there depiction of that conflict's horrible arenas--and a moving homage to the men whom fate brought there. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly

Say "Iwo Jima," and what comes to mind? Most likely a famous photograph from 1945: six tired, helmeted Marines, fresh from a long, terrifying and bloody battle, work together to raise the American flag on Mount Suribachi. Bradley's father, John, was one of the six. In this voluminous and memorable work of popular history mixed with memoir, Bradley and Powers (White Town Drowsing) reconstruct those Marines' experiences, and those of their Pacific Theater comrades. The authors begin with the six soldiers' childhoods. Soon enough, bombs have fallen on Pearl Harbor, and by May '43 the young men have become proud leathernecks. Bradley and Powers incorporate accounts of specific battles, like "Hellzapoppin Ridge" (Bougainville, December '43), and pull in corps life and lore, from the tough-minded to the slightly silly, from mandatory penis inspections (medics checking for VD) to life in the pitch-dark of "Tent City No. 1." And they cover the strategy and tactics leading up to the awful battle for the islandAthe navy's disputed plans for offshore bombardment, cut at the last minute from 10 days to three; the 16 miles of Japanese underground tunnels, far more than Allied intelligence expected. A quarter of the book follows the fighting on Iwo Jima, sortie by sortie. The final chapters pursue the veterans' subsequent lives: Bradley and Powers set themselves against often-sanctimonious tradition, retrieving the stories of six more or less troubled individuals from the anonymity of heroic myth. A simple thesis emerges from all the detail worked into this touching group portrait, in a comment by John Bradley: "The heroes of Iwo Jima are the guys who didn't come back." No reader will forget the lesson. (May) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

They were six boys from different areas of the country - Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Arizona, Texas and Pennsylvania. They were five Marines and a Navy corpsman. They were immortalized in a single second, when a photographer snapped a picture that would become The Photograph, the most reproduced photo of the last century. This is the story of those young men, all of them working class, all of them struggling to fight a war. Three of them survived to come home, where they were dined and honored and where they struggled to forget the awful images of Iwo Jima. John Bradley, for instance, remembered the corpse of Iggy, his best friend who had been horribly tortured by the Japanese. This is the story not only of the battle of Iwo Jima and The Photograph that made these men famous; it is also about their lives before the war; it is the story of the three survivors and what happened to them after they left the battlefields. The survivors themselves said the real heroes were those who didn’t come back from Iwo Jima. But one must not forget that there were like so many other men who were not as well known or immortalized on film and in bronze. These six men in The Photograph became the image of the war; their valor was what we wanted to see, not the unbearable bloodshed. Ira Hayes is the best known survivor, but he is known as much for his dark side as for his heroism. Hayes made the headlines for his drunkenness and his arrest record before and after the war. This was a sad end for a brave Marine. I am glad Bradley wrote so well about his father and his father’s comrades.

James Bradley is the son of one of the six men identified in perhaps the most memorable photos to emerge from World War II. John Bradley, a Navy corpsman who was among the thousands of Marines who made landfall at Iwo Jima in February 1945, participated in the flag raising atop Mount Suribachi on Feb. 19, 1945. His son James profiled each of the six men in that flagraising. He not only tells the reader about how each of the men came to be among the Marines on Iwo Jima, but describes how they performed during the battle that lasted 31 days and claimed thousands of casualties on both sides. The author also talks about the lives of the three surviving fundraisers after the battle, including his father. He focuses on how each man dealt with the demands of their celebrity as well as the horrors that lived within each of their memories of Iwo Jima.As a personal note, I chose to read "Flags of Our Fathers" because my father, a 22-year Navy man, fought in the South Pacific during WW II. This book brought home a much greater understanding of the perils and tragedy of war.

While I am very glad that I took the time to read this book, I must admit that it took me quite awhile to get through it as I found it to be incredibly difficult emotionally to deal with. I have read much about WW2 history these past 15 or so years and so am not a stranger to the horrible conditions under which so many many people worked and lived but realizing that the majority of these young men were really just boys was heartbreaking for me as I have 3 sons and know that in another place and time that could have been any or all of them in those situations. My father was a WW2 vet who died at age 91 about 1 1/2 years ago. I learned a lot from him as he loved to talk about his days in the eighth Air Force. I don’t think you will regret investing the time into this book but just be prepared for a reality check. Like Doc in the story my father returned home went to college on the GI bill married my mother and became a funeral director. He worked at this profession until mere months before his death and truly enjoyed his work and those he provided care and comfort too. Perhaps that is another reason why this book was rather tough for me to get through. All in all worth the struggle.

Excellent account of the history of one of the most famous photographs of all time as well as a detailed look into the lives of those involved including the historic battle for Iwo Jima. If you enjoy World War Two history, you won't be disappointed.

James Bradley catches the brutality of the battle for the miserable island of Iwo Jima, the ordinariness of the young Americans who were to capture it, and the barbaric Bushido code of the Japanese to hold their sacred ground. Six young Americans, who were immortalized in a photo of the raising of the flag, are forever remembered in their family and hometown contexts, including a history of Arizona's Pima Indians. Sometimes in the same paragraph, Bradley refers to his father as "Doc," sometimes as "my father." Since his father wouldn't talk about Iwo when he was alive, his son was compelled to learn all he could after John Bradley died. A remarkable story that must not be forgotten.

Tolbert offers a perspective on an altogether new element in southern history, the life of the town. The arguments she makes regarding the importance of space, sense of place, landscape ideals, and their relevance to daily life in the towns of Middle Tennessee are persuasive and deftly presented.--John Michael Vlach, author of Back of the Big House: The Architecture of Plantation SlaveryTolbert explores issues of work, family, and disorder . . . presenting a facet of antebellum slavery rarely seen in the historical literature.--Journal of the Early RepublicAddressing a topic which has so frequently sifted into the interstices of antebellum American history and landscape studies, Tolbert has crafted in Constructing Townscapes a work of remarkable originality and importance. From her skillful and copious use of sources as varied as diaries, maps, buildings, and court records, Tolbert has recovered in three complex dimensions the particular functions and meanings of the small southern town. In adept ways she draws her readers through a thoughtfully researched and convincingly argued set of points. Beginning with the assertion that a small town is neither a knotted bit of rural life nor a stultified city, Tolbert advances her analysis through discussions of physical place-making toward subtle and compassionate attempts to account for the small-town experience of residents empowered or confined by their different races, ages, and genders. Constructing Townscapes represents the best in interdisciplinary scholarship; Tolbert has shared with us an appealing and accessibly written study of real significance and lasting value.--Camille Wells, University of VirginiaConstructing Townscapes is an eminently readable volume that should be required for any history, architecture, landscape, cultural geography and archaeology class.--Vernacular Architecture NewsletterA thoughtful and interesting book that enhances our understanding of the antebellum era in the South and of the dynamics of small town life.--Journal of Southern HistoryRepresents a vigorous challenge to the somewhat more rigid parameters of quantitative history that is sometimes employed in urban studies. The fact that antebellum towns possessed fluid borders has been acknowledged by many. However, Lisa Tolbert's interdisciplinary approach demonstrates the potential of looking beyond the census returns and examining spatial and architectural change as a creative means to uncover the mysteries of small towns in the Old South.--Southern HistorianFascinating. . . . Constructing Townscapes will surely become a model for future students of the American cultural landscape.--Journal of American HistoryThis book not only broadens our understanding of the history of the antebellum townscape but also erects a guidepost on our path to a more integrative study of the built environment."-Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians

This book was awesome. Tourmaline (aka Tori) was a kick butt take no crap kind of girl. She gave as good as she got. I loved her. She had an awesome personality and was super caring. Then there were the guardians. Absolutely loved them including Onyx. They were loyal to no end. The story was great, fast paced and full of drama, action and laughter. I am (im)patiently waiting for book 2! Overall, another great read from Quinn Arthurs.

This book is brilliant. I love Tori, she's not your usual heroine. Is she snarky? Sure. But she is so much more, including not human. She is fearless/fearful, courageous, and totally can't tolerate bullies. She has a murder to solve, magic to learn and a baby dragon to care for all while staying alive and adjusting to three Guardians. This book is so entertaining, there is great world building and characters and a wonderful plot. I was hanging on every page and Bam! It was the end of the book! So not cool! it says that the next book is coming soon but not when that actually is. Heavy frown! I'm waiting and not happily. Enjoy. 💙💛💚💜

Do you like stories about Fae, witches, elves, dragons, etc? If so, The Guardian is right up your alley. Tourmaline, Reed, Onyx and Terran make a great team along with River and Opal. There is a lit of world building as Tourmaline (Tori) had thought she was human and suddenly finds herself in a world where magic is very real. She needs to learn to protect herself and learn fast, because there are people trying to kill her for reasons she doesn't quite understand.

While this started out as a slow read for me, and I almost shelved the book, Guardian had an interesting base story and enough unexpected twists and turns to keep my interest. The men followed standard tropes: the nerd, the protector, the standoffish jerk, but there was some nice character development. A few areas that would have benefited from more depth, but overall, this was well-written (only a couple of obvious typos, but nothing distracting).

This book was an absolute roller coaster of all the feeling to have. Tori falls in to an amazing adventure after completing a spell on her mothers last breath and gains some amazing hunks out of no where sworn to protect her at all costs. This books is a must read from me!

Oh. Oh wow. That was just. Wow. Ummm...so I need more! Seriously though, I just about died laughing at parts and I am so in love with the guys. I realise this us more gushing than reviewing but I'm just kind of speechless. Read this book!

This is a high energy, never-stops-moving story that will pull you in from the start! Absolutely love the characters, especially the strong will and sarcasm of the MC, to which I completely relate. Quinn Arthurs' writing style is witty and has the ability to make you experience the story with the characters, not just reading words on a page. Really excited for the rest of this series!

I enjoyed the world building and going on the journey with the fmc. I loved her strength and snark, but she also had a huge heart. I can’t wait for more sexy times with her guardians once she opens her heart to them. Fun read.

Good book for agents that want to "explode" their business but not very helpful for those of us that just want to be an agent and do a good job. Most of the information was how to add employees to your business model. The better book for a realtor is "The seven levels of communication" by Michael J.Mayer; great hands on learning advise!!!!

This book sat on my bookshelf for three months before I even cracked the cover. I wish I opened it sooner. This is a great guide to becoming a successful agent and building a lasting business. The models within are scalable, so if you prefer to set more modest goals and then progress to a million, this book will get you there. This book helps me plan my activities to benefit me now, while being a road map to get my business where I want it to be in the future.

I have yet to obtain my real estate license but purchased this book to give me insight before I get started. This book can be of huge value for any entrepreneur regardless of industry. I am certain my future success will be propelled from the knowledge and wisdom in Gary Keller's book.

As a brand new agent, I read this book hoping to get tips and tricks of the trade. While I did get some great advice for is to grow my business I was hoping to get a few more basic starting out instructions.

I would suggest every new agent read this book.

Explains step by step how to make it BIG in the Real Estate industry. Very easy to read, and the author drills it in your head on what to focus on: Leads, Listings, and Leverage! 7th Level here I come!!

Book has a lot of great advice that can be for any selling career not just real estate. I started to read it and stopped and started over just so I can highlight and take notes! Worth every penny!

Superb book. From the mindset development to specific information on how to create, scale, and maintain a real estate sales business, this is a great book.

From the Back Cover

In 2008, Aspen Matis left behind her quaint Massachusetts town for a school two thousand miles away. Eager to escape her childhood as the sheltered baby girl of her family, Aspen wanted to reinvent herself at college. She hoped that far from home she'd meet friends who hadn't known her high school meekness; she would explore thrilling newfound freedom, blossom, and become a confident adult. But on her second night on campus, all those hopes were obliterated when Aspen was raped by a fellow student. The academic year commenced; Aspen felt alone now, devastated. She stumbled through her first college semester. Her otherwise loving and supportive parents discouraged her from speaking of the attack; her university's "conflict mediation" process for handling sexual assaults was callous—then ineffectual. Aspen was confused, ashamed, and uncertain about how to deal with a problem that has—disturbingly—become common at institutions of higher learning throughout the country. Her desperation growing, she made a bold decision: she fled. She dropped out and sought healing in the freedom of the wild, on the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail leading from Mexico to Canada. In this important and inspiring memoir, Aspen chronicles an ambitious five-month trek that was as dangerous as it was transformative. Forced to survive on her own for the first time, squarely facing her trauma and childhood, she came to realize that the rape was not the only shameful burden she carried with her as she walked. She found herself on a new expedition: to confront—and overcome—the confines that had bound her since long before her second night at college.A nineteen-year-old girl alone and adrift, Aspen conquered desolate mountain passes and met rattlesnakes, bears, and fellow desert pilgrims. Among the snowcaps and the forests of America's West, she found the confidence that had eluded her all her life. After a thousand miles of solitude, she met a man who helped her learn to love, trust, and heal. Then from the endless woods she blazed a new path to the future she wanted—and reclaimed it.What emerges is an unflinching portrait of a girl in the aftermath of rape. Told with elegance and suspense, Girl in the Woods is a beautifully rendered story of emotional and physical boundaries eroding to reveal the truths that lie beyond the edges of the map.

I am a bit torn when it comes to this book. The writing is absolutely beautiful-- Aspen is truly talented and gifted when it comes to penning words. Her descriptions and observations are so sharp when they're objective that it feels like you're standing there with her. People spend decades honing the kind of voice and talent that rises naturally to her.I started out empathizing a lot with our narrator. Her mother sounds like classic waif-type BPD. My step-mom was a witch type but I understood the stifling, unhealthy pressure that Aspen had to operate under, the damage that a lifetime from birth of being overly cocooned so you doubt your own abilities to an insane degree.I kept turning the pages and looking for growth as she progressed along the trail and I did not find it. I find that disappointing. Aspen apparently found it in herself but what I saw was a woman hungry for male validation seek it until she found it. Did she think she was the only woman on the trail who had been raped or molested? Did she think she was the only one hurting? Her treatment of fellow women on the trail is abhorrent. She reduces them to sexual desirability and then writes off the men who may care for them as "losers", as if everyone out there is slavish to sexual approval the way she is. It's debasing not just to the women who were on the PCT that year, it's debasing to the men who she assumed were unable to care for women outside of their sexual output. Aspen only tentatively grasped at the very end of her journey what a trail family is, but leading up she had nothing but derision, suspicion, and hatred for the women who had their own. The kindest things she said about women on the trail was when she said nothing at all. That is not the fault of those women, but the fault of Aspen.Aspen forgives her family and it was cathartic to see that, but in the end she's still the very self-centered, overly judgmental person she started out as. Expecting everyone to shower her with empathy while providing exactly none. As beautiful as her writing is, I never got the impression that her thoughts ever strayed to the plight, feelings, and being of other people.I am not surprised she was not welcome in the groups that form up along the trail. She started her hike a marred woman and she ended it a marred woman. She tries to present like she healed and came out stronger.. I think that's an enormous lie. Maybe in some ways she came out stronger, but she left the woods the same as she entered-- reliant upon the validation of men no matter how toxic, at the expense of other women. This is a sad book, and it's all the sadder because I don't think the author realizes how sad it is.

As previous reviewers mention, this is not the story of self-discovery and self-reliance that one might hope for. In reading the description, I was hopeful that this would be a memoir about the recovery of a young woman who had experienced a trauma and went to the woods to heal. That isn't really this book. Aspen spends the majority of the text seeking male approval from nearly every man she meets on the trail and desperately looking for validation, which doesn't do much for the "girl power" aspirations of the premise.I want to stress the privilege that Aspen has to experience the PCT the way she does and to survive. Often it is from sheer dumb luck or the benevolence of others, but her primary privilege comes from the generosity and kindness of her parents. Yes, they didn't react in the perfect way when she told them about her rape, but they also spent thousands of dollars on her journey of self-exploration and she appears terribly ungrateful. I also find it frustrating that the end of the text focuses on Aspen changing her relationship with her parents, which is a theme that appears nearly out of thin air. Obviously they are flawed, but by drawing attention to them Aspen only highlights her flaws. This of course brings up the point that Aspen as a character is often deeply unlikable. I began the book feeling empathetic towards her and ended it being annoyed. She makes decisions that put her in danger, speaks down to most of the folks she meets on the trail, and generally doesn't take responsibility for her actions. She places much of the blame for her problems on her mother's coddling and the trauma that she experienced, never taking accountability. As far as character development, there is some, but it wasn't really as dramatic as I would have liked. I was really hoping she would come out the end of the trail as self-reliant, responsible, mature, and aware of her privilege. I desperately wanted her to show her parents some gratitude. Apparently that was too much to ask. Additionally, while there are some moments of beautiful prose, I found the writing to reflect the writer's immaturity and inexperience.

After reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed, I was really looking forward to this book. I was hugely disappointed and found this book to be one of the worst books I have read in years. I am only giving it one star as you can't give zero or even 1/2 stars. How can this book be so awful? A woman goes on a treacherous hike clearly unprepared mentally and physically. Not only that, but she does everything she says she's not going to do! She wants to go to a big pre-hike event - writes about how much she's looking forward to it and then skips it because she meets a random guy she finds cute? This after being raped by a random guy. Seriously!? She wants to hike alone but stays with this boy and another man. The other boy is clearly sexist and racist but never ever says anything to him? Wow. She keeps writing she wants to be alone but is constantly - CONSTANTLY looking for boys (after she dumps boy #1) and sex and people to hike with. Unreal. I understand she went on this hike to sort herself out after the rape, but she continuously put herself in dangerous situations and I found myself not having any sympathy for her whatsoever. You are hiking a serious trail without serious food or a compass? You know you are out of water but don't ask for some from someone who has plenty? This read more like a psychotic's romance adventure novel than a memoir. Please skip this and read Wild instead. Absolutely horrible.
