This book reads like a companion piece to the movie "Miracle". As it happens, I had just seen Miracle a couple of times before I bought this book. Miracle is a great 'feel good' movie and you don't have to be a hockey fan to love it. But I think only hockey fans would enjoy this book.I love hockey, so I gave the book 4 stars. I would have given it 2 stars if it was about a different sport. I enjoyed Mr. Coffey's writing style but I think his organization skills need work. The first part of the book was composed of 1 or 2 paragraph factoids about the game and the players. The great majority of the book was organized like a hockey game: period 1, intermission, period 2, intermission, period 3. This sounds like a clever idea, but it really wasn't. A large part of the period sections was merely a recitation of the plays. In other words, it was like listening to a broadcast of the game. Mr. Coffey wove human interest stories about the players' lives into the play by play, but still...So a lot of the book wasn't actual writing, it was transcribing a broadcast.As I said, I enjoyed the book but I don't recommend it to anyone except hockey fans.

Great book and that is from a guy that has never played hockey. This book fills in all the blanks that Miracle leaves out. It goes into depth about the members of the team, their upbringing and what made that team so magical. I was so excited to find this book on my recommendations. I downloaded it instantly and started reading immediately. While I LOVE Hockey, and Love Love Love the 1980 team, this is not what I expected.The way the book is pieced together it is very choppy to read and a little confusing. The author takes you through the russian game piece by piece, but when he is focusing on Buzz, you will go back into his childhood and it is very rambling. Good information, not well placed. You will find out about the town and growing up, and the socio economic issues the town had, not in a smooth telling, they will talk about the town then talk about how many people were laid off in 2003 and then back to Buzz as a child. Very disjointed. Then the when done with Buzz it goes back the game and picks up another player.Brooks is in here in chunks, and then back to game or player. This is one of my favorite stories, and I did like some insight from the Russian players; however, it was too difficult to get to the pertinent material. It felt like there was a lot of filler information that was not necessary or was so poorly placed it lost its importance in the jumble.I gave it the rating I did just because I LOVE this team, I was 9 years old and watching the Olympics with my parents and God parents in Lake Tahoe. I did like the author pointed out that people remember exactly where they were and that is rare for something good, usually you remember that for major tragedies, like 9/11, The Challenger explosion etc.If you are wild about this story and willing to wade through this to get information it is ok. If you are hoping for an easy enjoyable read I would pass.

I can rewatch the movies about this hockey game over and over, and never tire of them. You'd think that there wouldn't be any more to say than what has already been filmed and written about this game, played so long ago. This book adds to that. It is not only a recap of the game, with the expected play by play of some key moments -- but it is also the story of many of the key players, both before and after the game. And it was a further insight into the magical and incomparable Herb Brooks. This book describes the people behind the miracle, the history, the backgrounds, and what happened to them afterwards. Like the movies about the game, this is a book that I will keep always.

The choppy literary style is almost unbearable. The flashbacks seem to be talking about the same person each time (the players are all nice, athletic, and blend into one another). I learned quite a bit about the historic game but had to skim over the identical life stories and unintelligible hockey terms to keep my sanity. I'll watch the movie, I guess, to feel the excitement. Very dry overall.

Wayne Coffey is a wonderful sportswriter for the NY Daily News, so seeing his name on this book gave me every reason to believe I would like it. I was right.A huge amount has been written and done about this team. There was a full-length movie, an outstanding HBO documentary and a made-for-TV movie (Karl Malden as Herb Brooks).This book fills a lot of the gaps and gives a lot of insight into the individuals. I especially appreciated that Coffey interviewed many of the Russians, his sections on Tarasov and Tikhinov are fascinating.Unlike Mr. Barat, I was able to follow the narrative of the book, it did not bounce around too much for me.And while I would have preferred more coverage on the other games the team played, before and during the Olympics, that is a mild quibble.The biggest gotcha in the book is when it talks about the game that the US played against the USSR two weeks before the Olympics. That game was won by the USSR 10-3 and it wasn't that close. Other sources said that both teams were trying 100%. Coffey believes that Brooks held back the US team a lot, not wanting to show his hand to them.I rarely give 5 stars to a book, this one deserves them.

These were not as vivid as I had hoped. Maybe good enough to stick on a card but nothing else.

I'm always a big fan of these sticker books, I have purchased many before this and will probably continue to buy many more. Some books have less pages/stickers than others but this seems to have more than some of the others I have bought. Beautiful as always and I have never had a problem with them not sticking to anything. I use these in my journals, on letters/envelopes, and anything else that just needs a little decoration. Love!!

For the price, I can't complain. The stickers are very pretty, and worked very well for my purposes. (I was using them on paper and cardsock. They "stuck" just fine. I'm not sure how well they would work on other surfaces.)There are a variety of designs and colors. Most of the roses are pink, red, and white, with a few pale peach and yellow. Each sticker in the book a unique "vintage" painted rose. The pictures in the product description are accurate.My only criticism is the way the stickers are cut. There is supposed to be a white border around the flowers, so if you are placing the sticker on a background that isn't white, the border around the rose can look kind of cheesy. To make it worse, the design isn't perfectly centered within the cutout, (the border is wider on one side, and almost touching the design on the other side), so they can also look a bit lopsided or sloppy. If this bothers you, you could trim the border with scissors or an exacto knife. I bought 2 booklets, and one of them was more "lopsided" than the other, so maybe I just happened to get a couple defective ones.That being said, I don't think the flaws are that big of a deal unless you had a very formal project in mind (and again, even if you did, you could fix it.) I thought they were pretty and worked well for a simple, colorful decoration on paper. I thought it was a very good value, and will buy them again if I need stickers.

Beautiful....these come it little book....when I opened it, I was pleasantly surprised by the stickers inside. I do a lot of card making and am always checking out different ones to find the best ones. When I found and received these, I wondered to myself if I should share my find. But finally decided it was the right thing to do. I was afraid the price might increase or these little treasures might be hard to get because of their popularity. But decided to share. Thank you. Love them.

These are nice enough stickers that can be used however you like-I use stickers for my hand made cards, and people really do seem to appreciate getting them. The roses are pretty, and I would imagine they would have some scents, unlike most roses today. The only thing I don't really like about them, and this is just a personal preference, is that when you remove the sticker from the booklet, there is a border of white around the roses. I say this is a personal preference because I'd much rather have no white border around the picture. The picture blends in better without this border. But they are nice stickers for the price.

I use these stickers as decorative envelope sealers on note-cards I mail to friends. Although the quality isn't the best, these pretty stickers adds a "special touch" to notes of thanks, or general personal correspondence to family and friends who still treasure receiving a handwritten note.I've purchased several books.Thank you!Respectfully,Maizie Lucille JamesFebruary 20, 2018

I bought these stickers with the intent of using them do decorate envelopes, and they do the job great!The roses are very realistic looking and come in various sizes and shades.Something to note is that they do have a small white border around them. But if that bothers you then you could just trim that off with scissors.Who would I recommend this to? Anyone who is looking for great quality stickers at a great price.

In this academic study, Holden, a British sociologist, attempts to understand why the strict and austere Watch Tower Society continues to enjoy rapid growth. This is neither a primer on the danger of "cults" nor an endorsement of the Witnesses' distinctive beliefs, but a balanced ethnography that draws upon interviews with both adherents and ex-members to help readers understand what it is like to be part of the Society. Holden's main thesis that the Watch Tower is engaged in careful and ongoing negotiations with the secular culture that surrounds it is a nuanced one, especially compared to previous studies that have depicted the movement as little more than an extremist rejection of modernity. The study bears the marks of the dissertation that it once was: it overexplains how data were collected and analyzed, surveys the historiography of the topic (which, as Holden points out, is all but nonexistent in the case of the Witnesses) and relies heavily on a few theorists (in this case, Clifford Geertz and Mary Douglas). Only one criticism: very very repetitive! It would have made a far better journal article than a book. However, the author offers theoretical explanation of converts, how such conservative movement stands to flourish in modern day, and paradoxical relationship between JW and modernity. Highly recommended students of sociology of religion or religious studies.

If you or someone you know are studying with Jehovah's Witnesses you owe it to yourself to read this. There are very few objective third person analyses of the religion available, this is one of them. Holden, neither a member that sees things through rosy colored glasses of faith, nor a former member embittered by disappointment or a bad experience, provides an analysis that is as up to date, accurate and unbiased as you will find.

Excellent resource to unmask the satanic claims of the Jehovah's Witnesses Governing Body. If you are a Christian read this book to add to your arsenal of weapons against this evil cult.

British sociologist Andrew Holden wrote in the Preface to this 2002 book, "And so to the objectives of this book. I write for an academic community, or indeed for anyone with a sociological interest in religious movements... In the pages that follow, I offer a glimpse of the modern world through the eyes of a group of religious devotees... The book is ethnographic and, as such, it is concerned with the Witnesses' version of reality... the book is not about comparative religion but about the lives of a group of people who claim to be IN but not OF the world."Here are some quotations from the book:"(Charles Taze Russell) also sold what he called 'miracle wheat' to credulous farmers at $60 a bushel. The fraud was eventually stopped by the federal authorities, who made him refund the money." (Pg. 18)"If there was one feature of the Watch Tower community that occupied my thoughts in the initial stages of my fieldwork, it would have been the absence of mysticism." (Pg. 58)"...someone claiming to have had an experience of a transcedental nature would be most unlikely to find solace in a Kingdom Hall. At no point in meetings is time made available for individual prayer... Although short prayers are recited, these last no more than two or three minutes and serve mainly to open and close meetings." (Pg. 64)"Several members told me that they preferred to partake in those aspects of Witness life such as Bible study and attending large meetings rather than ministry work because of the rejection from large numbers of uninterested sceptics." (Pg. 75)"Young Witnesses who intend to undergo baptism rarely progress to college or university. This can be a source of regret in subsequent years among those who are reared in the organization but who later defect." (Pg. 135)"Speaking to a huge audience of Witnesses in 1976, (Frederick) Franz attempted to explain why the (1975) prophecy had failed. He told them, 'It was because YOU expected something to happen.'" (Pg. 152)"Any Witness found reading literature that attacks Watch Tower theology risks disfellowship..." (Pg. 158)

I was raised Baptist; however as an adult, I still had several unanswered questions or certain things that did not seem practical. Over the past five years, I have been in search for the “truth” about life. I have studied with Catholics, IHOPers, Muslims and every class of Christianity. For the past 10 months, I’ve been studying with Jehovah Witnesses, so I have a little insight on the books topic. Holden did a good job pointing out the general structure and routines of the Society. The Society has created the perfect organization, with imperfect people and Holden research revealed that truth. The book is well organized and structured like a textbook. It starts with why the Witness believes “the end is near” and ends with Holdens conclusion of his experience in learning about the Society. He even has a glossary in the back to help you better understand the Jehovah Witnesses terminology. Holden also help people to understand that Witness are good people. I grew up running, hiding from them or pretending that we were not home, and after reading the book, you may not necessarily want to convert, but you may be more likely to open the door or at least be a little nicer when you tell them you’re not interested.Andrew Holden, a British Sociologist has taught various level of sociology throughout his career. He attended several meetings and interviewed people who had been in the organization. Holden tries to stay neutral throughout the book, but in my opinion, he fails to do so. He seemed a little ethnocentricit. For example throughout the entire book Holden insinuated that the organization was cult like. It’s true that Witness are “in” the world, but not “of” the world. This simply means that they live in the same communities, work the same jobs and go to the same schools as everyone else, they just don’t participate in ungodly activities.( same as other religions.) At the end of the book I realized, that everyone’s perception of things is different. Holden attended several meetings, and the things that he took for the people and the meetings were totally different from me. Over all I liked the book; for what it was, it was a pretty easy read. If you’re looking for general information about the operations of Jehovah’s Witnesses or your studying sociology, then this is the perfect book for you. However, if you are in search for the truth and want a sincere understanding about the religion, then its best to attend your local Kingdom Hall form your own opinion.

This book was pretty useful for my trip to San Diego. It had some interested information about the area and laid out information about the different districts. Honestly I wish they had a version for just San Diego because I feel like they could have covered even more, but all in all a solid purchase.

Have travelled frequently to Europe with many LP guides as a reliable and recommended companion. I am 43 years an Angelino and in comparison to European guide hooks highly disappointing to. I guess this book is a maybe ok guide for the first time foreign traveller. Where are the restaurants? Hotels? Beach bars?

This is smaller in size than older editions, but it is as informative as the Lonely Planets of Old. Easier to carry around with you. We are yet to travel to LA to try this edition out. To my way of touring and thinking this is an interesting Lonely Planet guide. I have purchased several others LP guides and some are more interesting to me than others. This one I have read cover to cover, my children(young Teens) have read and enjoyed this as well. Yes I am happy I have purchased this book. I always use these books inconjuction with the net and current local newspapers.

Lonely Planet is usually one of the best travel guides one can find, but the LA edition proved uninspired for me during a Nov 2012 week in LA. It did not help me decide what to visit or how to get there, and LA County is hard to navigate. The AAA tour book was far better and easier to carry if the hotel section is torn out.

I guess it's my fault for buying not just what I needed but the next best thing..I needed a city guide for the city of Los Angeles but there was not such book available from Lonely PlanetI always choose lonely planet because 9 out of 10 times provides me with the information I need and right on!Maybe it's okay for travellers taking a tour around the coast of southern California but definitely not so much for an in-depth knowledge of LAI was very disappointed to find there was no pull-out map, very little information for public transportation, and incomplete page maps (which by the way, I believe should never be split into two pages)

Excellent resource for visiting Southern California. We have not been on the trip yet but this guide gives us a great lay of the land and plenty of highlights to take in.

It is a very superficial guide, a lot of pages but fair description of the landmarks. Poor section of restaurants and the overall organization of the guide is confusing.Disappointed with lonely planet
