How can one write a book that purports to be about the work of an important architect, and not include a single floor plan? In fairness the dust jacket blurb concedes "this is not a technical examination, or...dedicated to [Ellwood's] architectural design." But how can one understand architecture without floor plans?There have been several books about the vitally important mid-century architect Craig Ellwood - but nothing of significance recently and nothing affordable (e.g., $600 for a paperback?!), so I was delighted to see reviews of this new book. When it came I thumbed through and was amazed to see no floor plans. "Well, not a problem," I thought, "the Internet is full of plans by Ellwood, so I'll just print them and insert in the appropriate chapters for later reading." Once that chore was completed, I reopened the book and was astounded to discover that it is paginated right against the binding in the middle of each page. In other words, the pagination is virtually unusable! One wonders why the publisher even bothered to include page numbers in the table of contents.And to think this book was published by Rizzoli - from whom I've bought dozens of books solely on the quality of their imprint. If the editor, Michael Boyd, didn't know better, Rizzoli should have. If I hadn't tumbled to the problems of this book until a month after it arrived, I would have repackaged it and sent it back.
