I enjoy all of Hillman’s works but The Soul’s Code especially so. It frees me of the labels and guilt our culture heaps on us as parents and especially as mothers and gives me an entirely new way to see my journey and my story, and that of others. More than that, it inspires reframing my story altogether and I feel completely validated in recognizing our cultural fallacies (group lies) and dismissing them from my life and my life story. It also transforms trauma into treasure and, given a choice of how to view your life to this point, who wouldn’t prefer a treasure storyline, even a hidden treasure, over a trauma narrative? I love it...it’s my second time to read it....there will probably be a third because it’s messages are reinforced with each reading.
This is a very moving idea about the notion that we come into the world with a Personal Calling and what it means to feel we were born with a diamon that looks out for us. That our destiny is there at the beginning of our life
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, as it is loaded with beautifully contemplated anecdotes and an emphasis on individuality. It was liberating for me to understand how the “acorn†has his or her own special destiny and the parents, the society or the early environment are only secondary. Highly recommended for those interested in fresh perspectives or a witty writing style.
Excellent book...examines life through the lens of a Jungian Analyst who is highly respected but totally open to the truth of each soul having a Daimon who chooses it prior to birth. This Daimon (muse, guardian angel, genius) will have its way with their individual. Hillman sites many historical stories of well known, famous people who were guided to their greatness by their Daimon! It is a very freeing yet provocative book based on Hillman's "acorn theory" that inside each person on earth is the seed of their destiny. Pretty amazing; very thoughtful and understandable.
This book came into my life at the perfect time. Going through a personal crisis and transformation right now, reading this book helped me see that I'm not crazy for feeling the way I feel. That there's something trying to break out of me. I not only saw myself, but I kept thinking about my son, now age 13, who has never felt that he fits in. I've always known he's special - every child is - and appreciated the ways he's different, but it feels like you against the world. This book helped me have the confidence to continue standing up for myself and my son.It's also written in a very reader-friendly language, not as academic as The Force of Character.
Hillman is new to me. Found him in quotes and footnotes. Found a few other of his books at the public library, especially liked A Blue Fire. Not saying I understood everything I read but it manhandled me enough that I respect it. The Soul's Code was a lot easier read. Probably there's an editor I need to thank. His writing is not to convey his ideas but is part of his ideas; he is writing prose like poetry to push he reader. I like that.
I love this book and have given it as a gift to at least 10 friends and relatives.
Hillman is a fantastic thinker and writer. He has taken Jung to new heights and new depths. I could barely wait to see how he dealt with the "bad seed," after reading about his "acorn" theory of personality and development. Well done, Dr. Hillman. I'm not sure I agree with your thesis totally, but it certainly find it more intriguing than the general psycho-analytic approach to reducing every person to being a product of his/her parental and genetic influence. Yea for the soul, the spirit, the heart--which leaves us to stand in awe of the mystery of the human essence.
